Observations:
September 2016 – The big netminder continues to battle to find starting minutes in the pro game after leaving the University of Denver during the 2012-13 season. He’s managed to get a handful of games at the AHL level in the Jets organization, but mostly has been bouncing around the ECHL in order to get the starts he needs to develop his still very raw game. David Dickenson
April 2015 – This season, Olkinuora has emerged as the primary starter for ECHL's Ontario Reign and has posted strong numbers in the process. For the first time since his college days, he posted over .900SV%. In 41 games, Jussi Olkinuora has posted a 25-9-3-3 record with a 2.48GAA and 0.912 SV%. After having a couple of difficult years, he has seemed to found his confidence again. Look for him to challenge for an AHL position in 2015-2016 with the Icecaps. Kevin Won
October 2014 – After only starting a single game with the Icecaps, Olkinuora was sent down to the Ontario Reign in the ECHL. Joe Cannata is currently the starter there and Olkinuora will be seeing backup duties for the time being. Kevin Won
August, 2013 – Signed in April 2013, Olkinuora is a tall, athletic netminder who was accidentally discovered by Denver University staff in 2011. This past season he beat out Adam Murray and Sam Brittain and took the number one spot on DU, posting 13 wins, six losses, and five ties with a 2.35 GAA and .927 SV%. Accolades he achieved included being named on the WCHA All-Rookie team in his freshman year and AHCA/CCM All-America Second Team in his sophomore year. This caught the attention of a few teams and Winnipeg was the team he ended up signing with. Olkinuora has great vision and is very aware of where the puck is at all times. The young Finnish goaltender has also spent summers training with other veteran goalies including Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom. He also managed to squeeze in an AHL game, allowing three goals in his pro debut. This season, look for him to compete with a spot on the St. John’s Icecaps with Ed Pasquale and Michael Hutchinson. Fantasy Outlook: C-
A long-term project with potential, but doubtful he’ll be able to get time ahead of blue-chippers Connor Hellebuyck and Eric Comrie.
