Observations:

Feb 2016 – Expectations were high on Ferland. He has above average hands and has shown a tenacity for forechecking. With other players in the Flames lineup struggling in an impact role, this should have been Ferland's chance to jump into fantasy relevance. He has shown continued inconsistency in both aggresiveness and impactfulness on the scoresheet. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2015 – He currently is down with an MCL sprain. He is officially on IR and is considered week-to-week. – Joel Henderson

Sept 2015 – Flames have come to terms on a two-year, one-way contract for Ferland. They worked quite a while to find something that worked for both sides. Ferland created a buzz early in training camp when placed on a line with Gaudreau and Monahan. This will not continue but many are looking for him to get off to a great start this season and build off the 2015 playoffs. Joel Henderson

July 2015 – Overall, Micheal took tremendous steps this past season showing he can be a difference maker at the NHL level in a bottom six position. However, this was after an up-and-down showing as he failed to impress in his early season stint with Calgary. He stepped in during the playoffs in place of injured Lance Bouma. Fans are left wondering if he can consistently bring passionate play for a full NHL season or if his injuries/inconsistency will continue to set him back. Joel Henderson

October 2014 – Ferland has been assigned to the Adirondack Flames of the AHL. Brad Wilson

September 2014 – Ferland scored two goals in the Flames 2-1 victory over the Avs in their fourth pre-season game Sunday night. He has looked very good both in rookie camp and now into the main camp. The numbers game in Calgary is making competition for spots incredible tough but Ferland seems to be making a case to stay in the bigs. It is still highly unlikely that the 22-year-old makes the team but he is showing he has something to offer when the time is right. Brad Wilson

September 2014 – Ferland played on a 'veteran' line in the final Young Stars game against the Canucks. Along with Markus Granlund and Josh Jooris the line combined for seven points as the Flames toasted the Canucks 6-1. Ferland had two goals and an assist in the game. He finished the tournament with the scoring lead after posting six points in three games. He also led all Flames with four goals. After his 18 points in the final 13 games he played last year before injury, this is a good sign for the youngster. He seems to have recovered well from the knee injury and will look to prove he deserves a big club spot in NHL camp. Brad Wilson

January 2014 – Ferland’s sophomore pro season is likely over already. After starting with 11 games of nothing, he went on a tear with 18 points in 13 games. But his season came to an abrupt end with knee surgery. All this limited taste has done is make us question what we can expect from him. He projects as a good, lower line, energy player, but how close is he really? He will obviously now need to come back from a serious knee problem, and we can hope it doesn’t hold back his game for the future. Had his pace continued, he would likely have been skating with the big club before long, but now he will need to reprove himself through training camp next season to get a shot, unfortunately for him with much more talented competition coming. Jason Banks

January 2013 – Struggled to turn pro this season in limited action with the Heat and showed little life in games outside a late game misconduct penalty in a 5-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies mid-November. He has recently been reassigned to his junior team in Brandon.  Jason Banks

March 2012 – After an average post-draft season, Michael Ferland has taken his game to new heights. He was in contention for a spot on Canada’s World Junior team and has proven to be one of the WHL’s most lethal scorers. In 68 games he put up 47 goals and 49 assists, for 96 total points. He was also honored by being named a WHL Second Team Allstar. He is a big strong winger that knows how to get the puck into the net. He also has the frame and physicality to make a difference defensively. Ferland should be a lock to play in the AHL next year. Zenon Hersymiuk

Fantasy Outlook: C

Some offensive upside. Mainly projects to be a third-line role player.
