Observations:

August, 2013 – T.J. Brodie has been signed to a two year bridge contract worth $2.125 million per year. At the conclusion of this deal, Brodie will again be a RFA, but with arbitration rights. The 23 year old defenseman had a solid season for the Flames, scoring 2 goals and 12 assists in 47 games. His +/- rating (-9) was in line with the rest of Calgary’s blue liners, and he was third amongst defensemen in ice time at 20:13. He is the type of young player Calgary needs to retain and develop in their rebuilding mode, and now has two years to prove his long term value to the team. Sheldon Curtis

January 2013 – Brodie has had an excellent campaign so far leading the Heat’s backend with 18 points in 32 games. He has only one goal this season which is very concerning considering he owns a cannon of a shot. I’ve noticed in watching several games this season that opportunities to shoot are coming, but he is struggling to place shots on target. He will likely continue at Abbotsford as a regular for the season as the Flames have seven blue-liners already with one way contracts, but should also see recalls when required. Jason Banks

March 2012 – Brodie developed his game in the ranks of the OHL with Saginaw and Barrie. During training camp he was on the cusp of making the Flames because of his offensive upside in running the power-play with his hard and accurate shot as well as his ability to move the puck. Honed his game last season in Abbotsford earlier this year, but has since been showing with the big club since November. Russ Bitely

Fantasy Outlook: B

Brodie has much in the way offensive skills from the back-end but needs to add muscle & physicality to his game.

Fantasy Prospects Report Notes (Any FPR’s released in the last 18 months will not be listed here):

2009 Fantasy Prospects Report:

T.J. Brodie just keeps on developing. A classic case of a late-bloomer, the smooth-skating defenseman netted just four points as an OHL rookie in 2006-07. However, in his first full season, the 6’1, 173 lbs rearguard increased that total to 30 points, earning himself the 114th overall selection at the 2007 Draft. In 2008-09, Brodie’s star has continued to rise. Tops on the Saginaw blueline in scoring with 50 points, Brodie finished tied for the team lead in assists with six in eight playoff games. Four to five years away.

Upside: Top four blueliner, PP QB (10-35-45+)

Certainty (NHLer; Upside): 65%; 50%
