Observations:

January 2017 – It has turned into a frustrating season for Johns. Before the injury to Jamie Oleksiak, Johns was a healthy scratch on a nightly basis. He is logging consistent minutes again, and he is too good to be a healthy scratch so look for things to turn for the better. His biggest fantasy contribution comes from hits due to his size, but if given time to develop, he could be a good, well-rounded player. Matt Kowalski

June 2016 – Johns impressed in his short time with the Stars, and will very likely keep his spot on the NHL team for next year. He provides a much needed defensive role for the group of blue-liners that the Stars employ, but won’t set the world on fire with points. Most of his fantasy value will come from defensive statistical categories, yet he will likely chip-in some assists with the offensive juggernaut, Dallas Stars. A top four role could be in the future for Johns to start the 2016-2017 season with the departure of Alex Goligoski. Matt Kowalski

March 2016 – Everything's coming up Stephen over the past 24 hours. Hot on the heels of scoring his first NHL goal and logging 22 minutes in a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay, the Stars have re-upped Johns for two more years. Financials terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it's believed to be a one-way deal, which is huge for Johns and poolies as it likely means his days in the AHL are over. Brad Phillips

September 2015 – By all accounts Johns went beast mode in Traverse City showing that he was a man amongst boys. Johns played four games scoring one goal, leading the team with 14 shots and evening wearing the 'C' for one game. Johns faces a bit of a battle to break camp with the big club given that the Stars already have eight defensemen on one way deals. But GM Nill has consistently stated that the best players will play so if Johns continues his strong play over to the main camp, he may force management's hands into trading a d-man to make room for him. Brad Phillips

July 2015 – Johns was acquired as part of the trade that sent Patrick Sharp to the Dallas. Stars GM Jim Nill and co. coveted Johns so much that they insisted he be included in the deal. He’s an impressive physical specimen who isn’t afraid to throw his body around. Johns had a strong first professional season progressively getting better as the season went along. He posted 21 points in 51 regular season games to go along with seven in eight playoff games to lead Rockford. He also tied for the league lead in plus-minus with plus-30. Despite playing virtually every game during his four years at Notre Dame, Johns missed a big chunk of this season with a variety of injuries (concussion, knee, broken arm) so he may need to rein in his aggressiveness to handle the rigors of the pro game. While he was drafted as a defensive defenseman, the offense has come along in the past couple of seasons. Brad Phillips

Fantasy Outlook: C+

He projects as a strong option in multi-cat leagues that count hits and PIMS but can also chip in offensively.
