Fantasy Summary

Top-4 Potential with PP1 upside

Observations

Jan 2021 – Kylington was a bit late to camp and it appears newcomer Connor Mackey has potentially passed him on the depth chart. He was placed on waivers to go on the taxi squad and one would think this could be the opportunity for a team to pick up a cheap offensive option and take that risk. He wasn’t claimed and he moves to Calgary’s taxi squad. If the couch GMs were wondering how valuable Kylington was to other teams, this could have been an indicator. If you’re a fantasy owner, he’s a bit of a long shot at this point. If nobody will give you a chance, there’s nothing much you can do. – Joel Henderson

Feb 2020 – With an injury to Mark Giordano, fantasy owners would have hoped this would be the moment where Flames try out Kylington on the second PP unit and see how it goes. Sadly, the offensive catalyst continues to not get any love on the PP or the PK for that matter. His minutes have slightly improved over the season but he’s still mostly in the range of 12-15 minutes a game. That doesn’t bode well for roto leagues or leagues who want those PPP. He has looked more comfortable at the NHL level as of late. – Joel Henderson

Nov 2019 – Well, Oliver has been sent down. He’s grabbed three goals in three games which included two of them on the PP. They all came in one game and did not register a shot in either of the others. At this point, coaches understand he needs to play a few games. His confidence is already there at the NHL level to jump into the rush and create offensively but there has been comments here and there from the organization about him still needing to improve on the defensive end. This is a player where a buy-low trade now could be terrific. Giordano and Hanifin are the only two defensemen who are under contract for next season so internally there could be changes. Kylington remains as an option to put up defensive points in a hurry if he gets the chance. – Joel Henderson

Sept 2019 – Remember just a short time ago where Calgary buying out Michael Stone was seemingly great for Kylington? Well, they signed Stone again after Valimaki sustained an injury. It would be surprising if Kylington spent a significant amount of time in Stockton in 2019-20 but it still at least appears Calgary would like more size and toughness on the third pairing if they can help it. Calgary opted to bring in defensemen via trade down the stretch, leaving only 3 combined games for him in March and April along with zero playoff games. Expect Kylington to be in and out of the lineup on the third pair with Rasmus Andersson unless injuries give him an every day job. – Joel Henderson

Aug 2019 – The Calgary Flames have bought out Michael Stone. While Stone played the right side and Kylington the left, it still is another pro contract which he does not have to battle against. He still has to deal with the depth of Giordano, Hamonic, and Valimaki ahead of him which leaves him as potential trade bait moving forward. Kylington has shown he is capable at the NHL level and that bodes well for his long-term future. – Joel Henderson

Apr 2019 – The trade deadline brought in depth defenseman Oscar Fantenberg who was supposed to supply supplimental minutes and support the other blossoming Dmen in Calgary. What did happen? He took most of Kylington’s minutes including a 18-game stretch where Oliver only saw one game. At this point in the year, Calgary seems to be wanting a bit more size and toughness from their sixth defenseman heading into playoff time. Expect Kylington to watch most of the playoff run this year. – Joel Henderson

Jan 2018 – Kylington gets to sit a game after playing in his 20th game of the 2018-19 season. He has one goal and one assist over that stretch but he’s noticeably become more comfortable. With injuries to Valimaki and Stone, Kylington is allowed to slot into the lineup and get a heavy stretch. He has shown poise and the ability to use his athleticism and vision to pinch when necessary. It doesn’t hurt that being paired with Rasmus Andersson allows him to be a bit more creative. If everyone were healthy, Kylington would still be in the minors but he’s shown over the stretch that he can be a consistent NHL player. – Joel Henderson

Nov 2018 – Kylington is dressing for his first NHL game of the 2018-19 season. After beginning another year in Stockton, the swfit Swede has proven to be the most valuable asset on the backend in the AHL. Calgary currently has three young defensemen on their NHL roster and he is certainly behind them based upon overall two-way play. The upside on Kylington is based upon his creativity through zone-entrances and small individual efforts. You can still find him at times watching the play when it comes to defensive-zone coverage but overall he continues to improve. His decision making has improved and he’s continuing to learn how to use his creativity within the system. Kylington would be on about 75% of NHL rosters at this point. Calgary could try and wait on him for another year and a half or dangle him as a trade chip potentially come deadline. – Joel Henderson

April 2018 – Called up on emergency, Kylington has now been returned to Stockton after being a healthy scratch for one game. At this point, one would think Oliver might have seen more action on other teams but due to injury and depth he’s always been just too far down the line. Calgary will go into 2018-19 with five defensemen locked up for another two years, a budding Brett Kulak needing a contract, and Rasmus Andersson and possibly Juuso Valimaki contending for a depth spot. If Calgary is looking to make a prospect swap in the summer, pick up Kylington if his opportunity arrises, otherwise continue to be patient with the Stockton Swede. He will eventually get an opportunity to show what he can do on a secondary-PP.  – Joel Henderson

Jan 2018 – Kylington is rounding into a pro defenseman. His numbers are solid and his defensive game continues to grow. It’s not the most exciting fantasy news, but it’s good that he’s killing penalties. He’s also well on his way to surpassing his rookie scoring totals. Calgary is in a position to buy though, and Kylington’s value might rise a bit if he’s used via trade. – Joel Henderson

July 2017 – Even though Kylington is still new into his 20th year of birth, he is beginning to have split reviews from the Calgary fanbase. Some have noticed his improved defensive play, his balance and strength increasing, and his point totals jump. Some have noticed Calgary continues to bolster their blueline both by the draft and via trade and Kylington still needs time to improve his decision making through the neutral zone. So how is the Swedish rover progressing? Certainly more than fine. No worries. If you were hoping Kylington would have magically cracked the roster by now, you’ll have to continue to be patient – Joel Henderson

Jan 2017 – You shouldn’t be surprised that Kylington led defensive scoring for Sweden with four points in seven games. His abilities were on display in full as he skated past the forecheck and made simple plays once he created a quality zone entry. He also tried to do too much by putting himself in high traffic decisions and making poorly placed passes which led to scoring chances against. While he possesses higher offensive ceilings than most, you’ll have to be patient. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2016 – Kylington has made WJC Team Sweden. Last year, Sweden went with an older defensive roster while some hoped Kylington would be part of it then. This is his chance. As far as fantasy owners go, you need to grab Kylington if he is still available before others get to see how much he’s developed a pro game. – Joel Henderson

October 2016 – Kylington was among the youngest players in the AHL last year but soldier through a 47 game campaign with 12 points. Kylington looks noticeably thicker this year, which should help him immensely. At times, being an 18-year-old defender playing against experienced men in the AHL, Kylington struggled. The added weight, experience and some additional firepower with the Stockton Heat will all help Kylington. His skating and puck-moving ability make him an ideal transitional defenseman in today’s NHL. Kylington is likely a year or two away from being a regular contributor for the Flames but is a player for the future for the club.  Zachary Devine

Oct 2016 – He was assigned to Stockton on Oct 3 along with a bulk of other prospects who had decent camps. The hype continues to grow for Kylington as he showed his dynamic and consistent offensive abilities in the prospect tournament in Penticton. The skill continues to be evident and I would expect a jump in his AHL numbers this season. While that aspect of his game is NHL ready, Flames will be patient and allow his play on the defensive side of the puck to continue to improve. – Joel Henderson

Apr 2016 – The Rookie of the Year for Stockton has been named Oliver Kylington. In his first NHL game, fans got a glimpse of his speed and ability to transition the puck or jump into the offense. They also got a window into him losing defensive responsibilities and turnovers while trying to be too fancy. He gets knocked off the puck too easily and need to put on that pro body weight and improve balance. His offensive ability is dynamic and he made great strides. Calgary Flames fans should be happy with the first pro year from this draft slider. – Joel Henderson

Feb 2016 – Kylington continues to miss games due to an upper body injury. The information on the injury seems to be slim and nobody is talking about it. With call ups, Kylington is missing out on quality PP time and significant minutes. He had been having a solid first pro season before the injury. Expect that he is “week to week”. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2015 – He has not been named to Team Sweden. Sweden has decided to go with older talent to be a quarterback of the powerplay and offensive catalyst. Oliver now has five points in fourteen games and it’s been reported that he’s already added ten pounds in muscle. One of his goals is obviously to continue to get stronger. If for some reason he’s still available in your prospect filled keeper league, that’s silly. –Joel Henderson

Oct 2015 – In his first game as a member of the Heat, he grabbed an even strength goal and a powerplay assist. It’s encouraging to see him get some secondary powerplay time. The more of that he can grab, the better for him. – Joel Henderson

Sept 2015 – Coaching staff has assigned Kylington to Stockton and ends the discussion of where he will play for the upcoming season. The hype remains high on him as he sees how his skills translate to a pro game. They must have decided that going to the WHL would be a step down, and I agree that this will help his development as he learns pro discipline. – Joel Henderson

August 2015 – He has been selected by Team Sweden to play at the 4 Nations Tournament in Russia. – Joel Henderson

July 2015 – Flames have signed Kylington to an ELC and there has been much speculation about where he will play next season. Currently, if he does not make the Calgary Flames opening roster, he needs to be optioned back to AIK in Sweden. He was also selected by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 2015 CHL Import Draft. Joel Henderson

June 2015 – Kylington may be this draft class’s Anthony DeAngelo, but his one-dimensional game caused him to fall to almost the third round. The Flames selected him 60th overall. At least three years away. Dobber

February 2015 –With the uber-slick Oliver Kylington an NHL team is going to land a future powerplay quarterback who is a bit of an untamed horse at times. He packs an impressive offensive skill set featured around smooth four-way mobility, steady puck skills and an above-average shot. At the next level, he’ll need to show that he can execute safe plays and not opt for the “homerun” play every time so that he can be trusted in all situations. Kylington is one of the best skating defensemen to come around in quite some time and it’s the basis of his tantalizing offensive attacks. He lacks ideal size and strength will always be a challenge but his ability to identify holes and exploit them with his feet are impressive. He owns a booming point shot and is very confident unleashing one-timers. His defensive game is a work in progress and it will never be an area of strength so he will always need to be paired with a reliable defense partner in order for Kylington to maximize his offensive skills. Brendan Ross
