Fantasy Summary

What Dahlén lacks in size, he makes up for in skill and smarts. He has a very real chance at becoming a productive top-six forward.

Observations

May 2022 – It may have taken longer than many were suspecting but Dahlen has finally broken through to the NHL ranks. He played the entire season for the Sharks, potting 22 points in 61 games. He still hasn’t found the same scoring touch in North America that he’s shown in the SHL and it’s clear that his game loses some of its lustre on the small ice. There is still potential for him to carve out a production middle six career however he likely won’t be a particularly relevant fantasy option.  Donesh Mazloum

March 2020 – The status of Jonathan Dahlen as a fantasy asset is relatively uncertain these days. After a dominant performance with Timra IK this season, posting 77 points in only 51 games the highly skilled Swede should be getting Sharks fans buzzing. Unfortunately, his dominance in his home country is only reinforcing the idea that he may be more committed to playing in Europe than ever returning to North America. Undoubtedly, Sharks GM Doug Wilson will be excited to reach out to the young forward, but with 2019-2020 being the final year of his NHL contract it is unclear what the future holds for the Swede. Alex Howes

October 2019 – Dahlen, 21, has taken his talents (on a loan) to the Allsvenkan league in Sweden this season. Although his 20 points in 11 games look good on paper for Sharks fans, the question of his commitment to playing in North America still remains. Dahlen possesses a ton of skill offensively but lacks defensive consistency. He is somewhat of a hero in Sweden after leading Timra to a promotion to the SHL two seasons ago. Although they have once again been demoted to the Allsvenkan league, Dahlen is beginning to look more and more comfortable across the pond. Alex Howes

August 2019 – Dahlen is headed back to Timra of the Allsvenskan. Dahlen helped promote Timra to the SHL in 2017, however, they were relegated back to the Allsvenskan the following year. After Dahlen was shipped from Vancouver to the Sharks, there were questions about his commitment to succeeding in North America, this move will only fuel that speculation. Dahlen has loads of skill but his game is still developing, particularly the defensive side. It’s hard to see this as anything but a big step back, Dahlen will turn 22 this season while playing in a league he has already dominated. Dahlen should now be available for cheap in your league, just be aware there is a non-zero chance he never comes back to North America. Chris Legg

June 2019 – Dahlen had an interesting season, he started as one of the most exciting prospects in the Canucks organization, but he just wasn’t able to find his way. He was reportedly unhappy with his ice time in Utica and didn’t feel he was being developed properly – this led to a trade deadline deal to the Sharks. Dahlen finished the season with the Barracuda posting four points in seven games, he sat out the last two games of the season with an upper-body injury. Dahlen remains a good prospect with offensive upside; although he doesn’t have the best top speed, his edgework is fantastic and he has great hands. Next season will be huge with the Barracuda. If he shows well, he should be in the mix for an NHL call up or two next season. Chris Legg

March 2019 – Dahlen is still looking for his first goal with the Sharks organization as he adjusts to his new environment. The Barracuda have shuffled him around their top-six looking for a good fit for the talented winger. He has four points through his first seven games with the team, and look for those numbers to improve as he becomes more comfortable in San Jose. Dahlen didn’t get an extended look in the top six with the Utica Comets, so the Sharks are hoping more opportunity will lead to increased confidence and production. His fantasy ceiling is tremendous if he can hit it, he has a ton of skill, he isn’t the fastest skater but he uses his edges well to create space for himself. Chris Legg

February 2019 – Dahlén has been traded from Vancouver to San Jose for 2018 third-rounder, Linus Karlsson.  The 21-year-old apparently requested a trade after an up-and-down season in Utica. The Comets have come under fire this season for underutilizing their young players. Petrus Palmu returned to Finland earlier in the year and now this. Dahlen possesses a top-six upside but still needs to improve his footspeed. Blessed with great edges, quick hands, and a nose for the net, he’ll compliment San Jose’s prospect pool nicely. Cam Robinson

December 2018 – Dahlen has been acclimatizing to the North American game well. His foray into the AHL last spring has clearly helped that transition, but so has his skillset. Dahlen plays a robust game that his highlighted by skill and tenacity that fits the style of play on this side of the pond. The 20-year-old has produced three goals and 13 points in 22 American League games thus far and has gone from rotating healthy scratch to a mainstay in the team’s top six. It won’t be long before he’s hanging out in the Canucks’ middle six. Cam Robinson

April 2018 – It’s been a magical season for Dahlén. The skilled forward passed up the opportunity to join an SHL club or head over to the AHL back in January due to loyalty to his long-time club team as they looked to advance to Sweden’s top tier – and on Friday, that dream was realized as Timrå overcame a 3-1 series deficit to win three straight games and defeated Karlskrona in game seven of the promotion round. The 20-year-old winger was everything for his team, finishing 2nd in regular season scoring and then leading all Allsvenskan players in playoff scoring with 14 points in 10 games – including the insurance marker in the final match. It is expected that Dahlén will now join the Utica Comets for their playoff run and begin his North American professional career. Cam Robinson

March 2018 – The legend of the Jonathan Dahlén in Timrå continues to grow. After refusing to exercise his out-clause and move up the SHL due to his long time squad having a chance to be promoted to the top tier with a championship, Dahlen has been an absolute force in the playoffs. He’s recorded four goals and seven points in three games while factoring in on 70 percent of his team’s goals. Dahlén and Timrå will now face Karlskrona HK (the last placed SHL club) in a seven game series to see who gets the right to play against the best team’s in Sweden next season. Dahlen will cross the pond and put his hat in the ring for a spot in Vancouver next fall but he is most likely destined to start in Utica and work his way up. Cam Robinson

January 2018 – Dahlen continues to be the best player in Sweden’s second tier – the Allsvenskan. The fiesty and dynamic forward has driven play on a line with 2018 NHL draft eligible players, Filip Hälinder and Jacob Olofsson and leads the league in points-per-game with 1.22. He has recently stated he would play three more contests with Timrä before exploring his out clause to sign with an SHL club or return to North American and join the Utica Comets. Many teams have reported interest in the 2016 second round pick, with Brynas and Farjestad BK appearing to be the front runners. Dahlen should come to the AHL next season and will likely be closer to NHL-ready then many believe. Cam Robinson

November 2017 – After torching the league with fellow Canucks’ prospect, Elias Pettersson a season ago, Dahlen is proving to be the best player in the Allsvenskan this year. While it was a smart tactical move to return to Sweden’s second tier where he was familiar with the staff and would gain plenty of ice and opportunity, it won’t be a surprise to anyone when he exercises his out-clause on January 1st to either return to North America and suit up in the AHL, or more likely, signs on with an SHL squad. The skilled forward has racked up eight goals and 15 points in 12 contests thus far. Cam Robinson

October 2017 – After struggling to return to 100 percent health after his bout with mono, Dahlen and his camp decided it was best to return to Sweden for the season. Many hoped he would find a way to slide onto the Växjö Lakers to continue building chemistry with top prospect, Elias Pettersson. That was always going to be a difficult option as the Lakers are well into their season and lack much room up front, especially in a scoring role. Rumours had it that SHL teams were generally concerned with bringing in a 19-year-old with no experience at that level, who is still battling the effects of mono so with few options, Dahlen has now signed with his former Timrä squad in the Allsvenskan (tier II). The contract has a January 31st, 2018 out-clause that allows the winger to either sign a contract with an SHL club or return to North America where both the AHL and NHL would be options – albeit a very small chance he’d see NHL ice this season. The unfortunate nature of the illness has taken a modicum of shine off a tremendous prospect but it shouldn’t slow him down much in the grand scheme of things. Cam Robinson

August 2017 – The Canucks have announced that Dahlen has contracted mononucleosis and will be unable to participate in the team’s prospect tournament or training camp. The energy-sucking illness will surely slow his ability to start the season on time or off on the right foot. However, according to GM, Jim Benning, the team still intends to bring the 19-year-old winger over when he’s healthy enough and have him play in the American league. As tempting as it is to try and reunite Dahlen with Elias Pettersson in Vaxjo of the SHL, having him play on what is shaping up to be a young, talented and exciting Utica Comets’ squad will be equally beneficial. Dahlen will get experience on the smaller ice, while playing in the more condensed schedule and be available to the big club if injuries arise or simply to give him a taste near the end of the season. The illness is certainly a disappointing turn of events, but the shine on this prospect remains. Cam Robinson

July 2017 – We’ll have to wait until after training camp to find out where the goal-scoring winger will end up playing in 2017-18 but through interviews at the Canucks’ recent development camp, it was revealed that if Dahlen was close to being NHL ready he’d suit up in the AHL with the Utica Comets. If the Canucks’ brass feel he’s a little bit away yet, a chance to reunite with his best friend and Canucks’ top prospect, Elias Pettersson with Vaxjo of the SHL is a tantalizing proposition. At this point, both choices appear to be quite favourable for Dahlen’s long term development. Cam Robinson

April 2017 – The Canucks have come to terms with the 19-year-old forward on a standard three-year, entry level contract. The high-scoring Swede will come over the North America and will inject some much-needed offense into a Utica Comets squad that has struggled to score goals the past few seasons. Dahlen has plenty of upside as a top-six forward but will need some time to marinate. Cam Robinson

March 2017 – Dahlen exploded during Game Two of the Allsvenskan playoff round-robin. His three goals and two assists were the fruit of a terrific game at both ends of the rink. The recent recipient of the Gold Cage as the league’s top Under-20 player, has looked dominant for long stretches in Sweden’s second-best league and offers terrific anticipation and a goal-scorer’s touch. It will be interesting to see if the former second-round selection will sign with the Canucks right away or stick around for a full season in his home county’s top tier. Cam Robinson

February 2017 – Dahlén has continued to impress against men in Sweden’s second tier. He leads all U20 players in scoring with 24 goals and 42 points in 44 Allsvenskan games. A cerebral and gifted offensive player, the newest Canucks’ prospect is unafraid of pushing into challenging areas and unleashing a heavy and accurate shot. He demonstrated this ability by finishing five goals in seven World Junior Championship contests and was constantly leading the charge for shots on goal. GM Jim Benning indicated that the organization would like to sign the former second-round pick to a contract this summer and bring him over to North America, but a full season in the SHL in 2017-18 shouldn’t be ruled out completely. Cam Robinson

February 2017 – The Canucks acquired Dahlén from the Senators straight up for Alexandre Burrows, which definitely expedites Dahlen’s eventual NHL arrival. Dobber December 2016 – Dahlen will try and join future teammate Filip Ahl in competing for Team Sweden at the WJC in Montreal and Toronto later this month. Dahlen has been a big part of the Timra offense this season with 12 goals, a team high, and 20 points in 25 games. He’s on pace to fly past his totals from last season as he’s only thee goals and nine points shy of the 2015-16 totals with half the season to go. Brad Phillips

July 2016 – The feisty goal scorer played his draft year against men in the second best Swedish senior league and lead his team in scoring. A relentless forechecker that despite his smaller size aggressively pursues the puck and digs in the hard areas. Dahlen owns a good wrist shot and has good hockey sense and vision. Undrafted in the CHL import draft, Dahlen will return to Timra in Sweden again next season. Peter Harling

June 2016 – Continuing with the unofficial theme of the 2016 Draft, Ottawa selected Jonathan Dhalen, son of former first rounder Ulf, with their second pick. He was a big riser in the draft rankings thanks to an exceptional second half of the season, with suggestions that he may be a late first round selection. This past year was Dahlen’s second with the Timra organization and his first full campaign in the Allsvenskan. Skating in 51 regular season games, Dahlen scored 15 times and amassed 29 points, both highs for an offensively inept team. In five playoffs games he accounted for half of his team’s offense with six goals while adding one helper. On the offensive side of the game, he’s equally adept at scoring and setting up teammate with aplomb possessing a solid set of mitts and a quick release. He’s a solid skater who does everything at a high rate of quickness. Dahlen will never be the biggest guy on the ice but that doesn’t deter him from exhibiting a high compete level and playing bigger than his size. He’s not afraid to drive to the net when carrying the puck and is a tenacious forechecker and is a solid defensive player. Coming back into the zone he keeps his head on a swivel. Likely at least two to three years away from seriously challenging for a roster spot, Dhalen could be the next in the long list of impressive Swedes to suit up for the Senators. Brad Phillips
