April 2019- The offence just wasn’t there this year for Ahl, finishing at less than half a point-per-game for his junior team in Sweden. It seems unlikely that Ahl has much fantasy impact in his future at the NHL level. Jordan Deshane

December 2018- The 2015 fourth-round-pick has yet to find his offensive spark in Sweden’s Junior leagues. At age 21, this is a big year for him as it is the year that Ottawa has to decide whether or not they will sign him. His large frame would no doubt be a welcomed addition to the organization if he can improve on his 14 points in 23 games. At this rate, don’t expect to see Ahl at the NHL level any time soon. Jordan Deshane

June 2018 – Ahl decided to return home to Sweden for 2017-18, suiting up for Örebro HK in the SHL at the start of the season. But he struggled to find consistency and a regular slot in the lineup. In 15 games Ahl averaged fewer than seven minutes per game and managed to post just one assist. At the end of November he was loaned to BIK Karlskoga in the Allsvenskan where he managed to find his groove playing top-six minutes. Ahl finished second on the team with 11 goals and chipped in four helpers. Looking league wide, Ahl finished tied for 12th in goals among U24 players and 15th in points-per-game with 0.52. It was an encouraging first professional season for Ahl, who’ll look to take another step in 2018-19 with his new team Tingsryds AIF. Brad Phillips

June 2017 – Ahl made the jump to North American hockey and found himself a primo landing spot with Regina, scoring 28 times (surprisingly seventh on the Pats) and adding 20 helpers in 54 games. In the playoffs, Ahl played the role of playmaker with 13 of his 20 points being assists. Initially hesitant to come over, he was persuade by Ottawa and it looks like the move is paying off. The focus for Ahl in 2016-17 was to drop some weight, which he did by shedding 10 points, and to improve his speed and conditioning. He has yet to be signed but in all likelihood the two sides will come to an agreement over the summer, as Ahl is eager to leave junior hockey behind and get his pro career started. Brad Phillips

December 2016 – Filip Ahl had been names to Team Sweden selection camp roster for the 2017 World Junior Hockey Championship. Ahl’s first year in North America has been a rousing success skating for the powerhouse Regina Pats to the tune of 17 goals and 14 assists in 25 games. Most impressive is that Ahl’s five game-winning goals are ties for first in the WHL. Brad Phillips

November 2016 – The big Swedish winger has made the transition to North America look easy in the early going. Through his first 15 games with the powerhouse Regina Pats, skating on a line with Austin Wagner and 2015-16 scoring champion Adam Brooks, Ahl sits tied for sixth in the WHL in goals with 11 and has dished out eight assists. No doubt his numbers are aided by the strength of the team overall, but Ahl’s production is encouring all the same.  Brad Phillips

June 2016 – The Regina Pats have selected Ahl 31st overall in the CHL Import Draft. He’s proven to be a dominant offensive player in the Swedish junior league but he hasn’t been able to translate that to the higher levels. Coming over to North America would be the next logical step in his development as he has nothing left to prove at the lower levels and isn’t quite ready for prime time in the SHL. He has the potential to be one of the key offensive cogs for the Pats. Brad Phillips

June 2016 – Pegged as a late second, early third round pick in the 2015 draft, the Sens were perceived to have snagged a solid value pick by getting Ahl in the fourth round. His Draft+1 year was more of the same by showing his ability to dominate against a lower level of competition. In 18 SuperElit games Ahl scored 18 goals to go along with 13 assists for the HV71 J20 squad, good for second on his team in scoring despite playing in half of the games than most of his team mates. He failed to translate that success to the SHL registering bupkis in 17 games with the HV71 big boys but did have a measure of success in the Allsvenskan with four goals and a couple assists in 16 games, adding another three goals and two assists in the playoffs. After a couple of years of shuttling back and forth between the junior and pro teams, he should start next season in the SHL giving himself a chance to prove that he belongs. Turning just 19 in a couple weeks and already blessed with NHL calibre size and puck skills, he’ll need to prove he can take that next step by hanging with, and producing against men. Brad Phillips

June 2015 – Ahl is a big aggressive winger that uses his frame to make himself noticed on the ice physically, protecting the puck with his size advantage. While he requires more than two or three strides to get there, Ahl’s top speed is up with some of the best. Ahl is a wrecking ball on the forecheck as he comes down the ice at high speed and uses his body well to either drive the opposition through the wall or make small hits to separate defenders from the puck, eventually finding his teammates crashing the net. His awareness on the forecheck is strong however his biggest weakness is his defensive awareness. Ahl spent most of the year in the U20 league in Sweden putting up 42 points in 34 games. Benjamin Gallant
