July 2021 – Vancouver has signed UFA Dries to a one-year deal. Hayden Soboleski

May 2021 – Dries saw his NHL games played drop yet again, getting into only 3 contests in 2020-21. The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season and he is unlikely to remain on an NHL deal in the organization that is deeper than ever. If he lands a deal elsewhere he has some streaming potential for his PIM generation, but his most likely outlook is as a top-six AHLer. Hayden Soboleski

May 2020 – After 40 NHL contests in 2018-19, Dries was only used in 5 during the 2019-20 campaign. This is a not a good sign for the 26-year-old who has proven to be a capable net-filler in the AHL. Despite being able to do-it-all with the Eagles, he hasn’t stood out in his NHL stints, although to be fair his ice time has never been significant. He’ll be contention again for a 4th-line role when the next season begins, but he is getting leapfrogged for higher-scoring or higher-pedigree options which won’t get any easier to overcome. Mild streaming potential if he gets called up, but do not draft. Hayden Soboleski

September 2019 – Dries has been assigned to the AHL Eagles to begin the 2019-20 campaign. He showed signs of promise during call-up duties last year, however the added depth in Colorado proved too much for him to overcome in camp. He will likely be among the top candidates for a recall when injuries strike. Hayden Soboleski

July 2019- Dries has signed a one-year extension with the Avalanche. He will once again push for a depth role out of training camp, but given the many additions to Colorado this off-season he will most likely serve as an AHL scorer and NHL injury fill-in.  Hayden Soboleski

December 2018 – The injury bug never left the Avs room and as such Dries has suited up 16 times for the Avs, getting recalled from the AHL almost every other week. 4 points in those games isn’t overly fantasy-worthy, and neither is his lack of PP TOI (or regular TOI for that matter with an average of 10:14). Serious injuries do mean that he’ll be a depth peripheral producer for a few more weeks at least. Hayden Soboleski

November 2018 – The injuries kept coming so Dries is amid another call-up with the Avs. He scored his first NHL goal after getting the call and another in the next game for good measure. With only 8 minutes TOI per game average this is likely a flash in the pan, but just like last call-up, this is excellent exposure for when he makes a push for a real role next year (or this year, at the rate injuries are piling up). Hayden Soboleski

October 2018 – Dries has been reassigned to the AHL as NHL roster players have been activated off IR. He got 3 games with the big club, but didn’t put up fantasy-relevant numbers in any category. Not worth a waiver yet even if more injuries hit, give him another season to develop. Hayden Soboleski

October 2018 – Against the odds and thanks to a couple injuries, Dries will appear in the Avs opening-night lineup. The AHL scorer won’t see a lot of ice, but still has a shot to impress the team if he can provide the offense and grit he’s shown at the lower level. Unlikely to be fantasy relevant now, but bodes well for making a full time jump in later years. Hayden Soboleski

July 2018 – The Avs have signed free agent Sheldon Dries away from the Dallas Stars organization. As an AHL rookie, Dries posted 19 goals and 11 assists in 70 games played – this combo of goal-scoring and making it into the lineup regularly is a great sign for anyone transitioning to a new league. In the AHL playoffs, he was a pure sniper, putting up 10 goals (but no assists) in the 22-game post-season.

His quick pro transition is extremely promising, and the fact that he weighs in at 180 lbs should make him a little less injury-prone than most 5’9″ players. Considering his strong knack for scoring over passing, he could put more pucks on net, he’s not truly a volume shooter yet. He drops the gloves on occasion and puts up a fair amount of PIMs, so  he looks like a multi-category prospect to watch as he continues his pro development. Hayden Soboleski
