Martin Hugo Haš

June 2023 – The Capitals decided not to sign Haš as he becomes a UFA free to sign anywhere, and that may include Europe. Haš did not break through in the QMJHL and the ECHL like the Capitals hoped so the team has elected to let him sign anywhere. He still has a way to go developmentally but if a NHL team wishes to take a chance he could become a solid bottom two-pairing defenseman with the right development. Pat Quinn

March 2023 – Haš has done pretty well in the ECHL with 10 points in 47 games. Now, obviously, the point totals do not tell the whole story with him, as fantasy GMs would want much better production (at least 0.5 ppg), but he has still held his ground pretty well in the league against larger players. Haš is not a high scoring player too, and if he is to progress up the professional ladder it will be as a solid two-way shutdown defenseman. Hopefully he can get an AHL or NHL deal next season though, but he may be swayed to go back to Europe if the Capitals do not keep him in the system. Pat Quinn

October 2022 – Haš has signed to play with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL as he will take the long road to get to the AHL and hopefully the NHL one day. He still does not have an NHL contract though. Pat Quinn

September 2022 – Haš did not produce as well as he should have considering he was in the QMJHL at 20/21 years old, considering how high scoring that league is, with just 20 points in 57 games. As of right now he remains unsigned by the Capitals, or any of the teams affiliates, and it is unknown where he will play in 2022-23. Pat Quinn

January 2022 – In the QMJHL Has he has only eight points in 21 games, but at 20 years old there should be much more production out of him. However, he is getting accustomed to the North American ice at a lower quality than the AHL, so it may speed him up when he reaches that level. He is still unsigned though so his hope is that this play will lead him to an NHL contract. Pat Quinn

September 2021 – Has has come over to North America to play in the QMJHL this season for the Shawinigan Cataractes. Pat Quinn

January 2021 – Has was once again one of the better defensemen on the Czech squad. He did only post one assist in five games, despite playing on the 1PP, so that is somewhat troubling. He did let his huge shot from the point off routinely but nothing came of it. It was just a short tournament but there is possibly an NHL player here. It will take him a while to get on the roster but there is a shot there as a #4-#6 defenseman. Pat Quinn

December 2020 – Has was loaned to HC Benatky nad Jizerou of the Czech2 league after not having any room on a roster for him in the Finnish leagues. With a lot of players coming back to North America a roster spot in Finland should open back up, but for Has that time will have to wait as he was invited to the Czech national team at the World Junior Championship. Has will be one of the top defensemen for the Czech squad, who will be expected to carry a lot of minutes for the team. Pat Quinn

January 2020 – Has has been one of the best defensemen for the Czech Republic and has three points in four games. Unfortunately for the Czech’s they were placed in to the group of death that contained Canada, USA and Russia. They were able to beat the Russians and took the USA to overtime and Has was a big reason for that, and the Czech’s made the playoff rounds. He has three points in four games and well need to do everything possible to attempt to beat the top Group A team in Sweden. Pat Quinn

December 2019 – Has has been moved around the Finnish leagues quite a bit. He started in the Jr. A Liiga and after two games he was moved up to the Liiga. In the Liiga he played two games, having a goal and an assist, and he was then loaned to the Mestis Finnish league where he has played the last 13 games. He was selected by the home country Czech Republic to represent the team at the World Junior Championship. Pat Quinn

July 2019 – Hugo Has has continued the tradition of the Capitals drafting players with two last names for the fourth consecutive year. Hugo Has was also a slider in the draft as many scouts were unimpressed with his 2018-201 season but realize there are quite a few tools there that can project him to be an NHL player. He has a good hockey IQ but the problem for him lies in his skating as he can seem slow which can make his transition to professional North American hockey very tough. Hugo Has does have a chance to make the NHL though, so this could e a fantastic fifth round pick for the Capitals is the value turns out. Pat Quinn

February 2019 – Czech defenseman Haš has been spending his second year in a row in Finland, playing mostly for Tappara U20 team in Jr. A SM-liiga which is the top junior league in the country. He’s also been a regular with Czech national teams at the junior level, and he’s always been one of their best players. Haš is a two-way defenseman with great size at 6-foot-4. He isn’t overly physical but definitely has the type of body that allows him to be more physical later on. He also has that always-valuable right-handed shot from the blue line. He does a good job moving the puck and joining the rush but doesn’t do anything fancy offensively. He has a good shot and he’s not afraid to use it. He has upside to become a number four defenseman at the NHL level but may end up peaking as a reliable bottom-pair guy. But he has a lot of qualities that are valuable to NHL teams which gives him good NHL certainty.  Jokke Nevalainen
