May 2022 – Following a respectable rookie slate (2020-21), Focht’s progress hit a roadblock over the 2021-22 campaign. With higher expectations, the 22-year-old was gifted an elevated role to start the year but failed to live up to expectations. Throughout the season, he found himself sliding down the lineup and even sprinkled in a few games with ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings. He contributed just 10 points to his stat sheet, racking 48 penalty minutes over 41 matches. He continues to offer some intrigue as a two-way prospect, but overall, has some developing to do should he be in consideration for NHL talks. Check back in 2022-23, where he will look to get things back on track. Dave Hall

May 2021 – With no Junior team to report to at the time, Focht elected to turn pro, signing his ELC in January, and reported to Utica. He jumped in head first, forming quick chemistry with fellow rookie, William Lockwood, and third-year pro, Jonah Gadjovich. He was handed almost immediate deployment on the club’s special teams, where he contributed for eight of his total season’s points (12). While he’s still a few years shy of making an impact at the top level, if at all, his willingness to compete, play at both ends of the ice, and more importantly, the club’s lack of depth up the middle, gives the Canucks’ brass something to keep a close eye on down the road. March 2020 – Focht had a productive 19-year-old season for the Hitmen. His goal scoring metrics increased while his per-game totals plateaued. He was especially impactful in the first-half. The fifth-round pick has played his four seasons of WHL hockey and is eligible to move on to the American League. However, it wouldn’t be overly surprising to see him return as a 20-year-old and look to really blossom offensively. The Utica Comets’ lack of centre depth may play a role in that decision. Cam Robison

June 2019 – The Canucks selected the overage centre with the 133rd pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Focht played well for the Hitmen scoring 26 goals and 64 points in 68 games. He was recently invited to Canada’s Summer Development camp for the 2020 WJC. The 6′ forward plays with a lot of determination. He has good hockey sense, good puck control and puts in an honest effort on a consistent basis. Despite being a 19-year-old, he still has some physically maturing to do. Cam Robinson
