Fantasy Summary

A tall and technically sound goaltender who reads the play well and has great puck tracking and the willingness to learn and adapt. He lacks the explosiveness and lateral movement of a bona fide starting goaltender, but is improving with every step he takes against higher-quality opposition.

July 2025 – The Montreal Canadiens continue to add to their strong pipeline of goaltending prospects by selecting Alexis Cournoyer in the fifth round. Cournoyer is a massive body between the pipes and will be joining Cornell University in the NCAA next season, where he’ll continue to progress and improve his technique. Cournoyer has been compared to Jakub Dobes in terms of style and how he moves around the crease, and ironically, he was chosen in the same round by Montreal. Cournoyer was a standout among goaltenders in the QMJHL, as he provided the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles with a consistent presence between the pipes. He challenges the shooter by jumping to the top of the crease and is very active when challenged in the high slot. His rebound control leaves shooters in the crease frustrated, as pucks seem to be absorbed into his equipment. He’ll need to work on his side-to-side movement to better prepare for high-danger one-timer chances, which is something Cornell should help with. – Shawn Wilken
