Depth forward prospect with bottom six upside

March 2020 – After seeing his first two years in pro hockey played at a mix of the ECHL and AHL level, Lorentz has stuck in Charlotte for the full year, scoring 43 points in 57 games. A big bodied centre/winger, Lorentz is a +22 this year and has picked up 31 PIM’s in his campaign. It is TBD whether he will get a chance down the road with the Hurricanes, but he is headed in the right direction to give himself a chance at doing so. Jack LeGwin

January 2017 – Lorentz has been an important player for Peterborough in his overage year, as a consistent pillar in the Petes forward group. He is on pace to easily surpass his past career high in points (48 in 2016) with 40 points in 43 games so far this season. The Canes late round pick had the game of his young career last week when he scored four goals in the third period of a 5-3 win over North Bay. Although he has improved his play over the last two seasons, Lorentz will likely need to spend a good amount of time in the minors before he is ready to fight for an NHL roster spot.  Kevin LeBlanc

January 2016 – GM Ron Francis has made a concerted effort to draft players with size over the past two seasons, and the trend continued with Lorentz. A player who was passed over in his first draft eligible year, the Hurricanes took a flyer on the Peterborough Pete with their last pick of the 2015 Entry Draft. This season, Lorentz has already eclipsed his career high of 37 points in his third season in Peterborough. He currently sits fourth on the Petes with 41 points in 47 games. As a tall, yet slight pivot, Lorentz was tasked with getting stronger by Carolina management post draft and it’s obvious that his new found conditioning has helped his overall game.Lorentz has assumed more responsability this year and the confidence has gone straight to his offence as he is carrying the puck with confidence and authority, making advanced moves with the puck. He has fast feet, and a quick release. The Petes are a fairly veteran laden team, and time will tell if Lorentz new found offensive touch is due to the prospect being a late bloomer, or an increased understanding of the league and his teammates. Nothing in his hockey career has been easy as a 12th round selection in the OHL draft, and it is a credit to his work ethic and mentality that Lorentz continues to improve.   Kevin LeBlanc
