Matthew Coronato

April 2023- Coronato finished off his debut with some excellent production. He took seven shots and had five of them on net, which is clearly resonant of the type of player he was at Harvard. In his 14:35 of ice time, he equally had one shot block, and was a solid presence. Flames Fans and fantasy owners got a good taste at what he does most and how next season he could be a great candidate for a late-round pick. He is an established offensive weapon who has a great quick release. A bit out of place defensively and a little slow, there are question marks, but for a player in his NHL debut, he has earned the benefit of the doubt. Carson Klein

April 2023- The Calgary Flames have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. That means it is time for Coronato to make his long-awaited debut for the Flames. He will have tremendous value in keeper leagues as he is a offensively gifted talent with lots of great tools. Carson Klein

March 2023 – Matthew Coronato has officially signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames. This is a massive move by the Flames as they get a player who is offensively gifted and is more importantly a breath of fresh air. This could go a far way for the Flames playoff dreams as he will be looked upon to bring some energy and a spark to the team that has not had one all year. He will be something the Flames have needed this year as they have tried to find replacements for wingers all year after losing two (Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau) in the offseason. March 2023 – Matt Coronato and Harvard fell to Ohio State 8-1 in the quarter-finals of the Division 1 Men’s Ice Hockey Championship. He has finished the regular season with the same number of points (36) as his totals last year with Harvard, except this year he played one less game (33). As Havard is eliminated, Coronato will now most likely sign with the Calgary Flames to help them try and clinch a playoff spot. What is interesting here is he is a right-handed shot, and the Flames have not been able to fill the void the entire year for a top-six right winger other than Tyler Toffoli. It will be something to investigate as a late-season add for fantasy managers this season who could put their team over the edge for the playoffs. Carson Klein

February 2023 – Coronato is having another dominant year at Harvard. He has been one of Harvard’s top players and has been recently nominated for the Hobey Baker award, which is given annually to the best men’s NCAA ice hockey player in the country. Coronato was asked about his chances of signing with the Flames and he just stated he wants to keep on improving, but he does think about it for next year. Coronato could possibly see some playoffs games when Harvard finishes the season and if the Flames do make the NHL playoffs. Right now, Coronato is the best prospect the Flames have and will be one for Flames to pinpoint, especially around April. Carson Klein

March 2022 – There is a reason that Coronato is the #1 Flames prospect in their system. This player oozes with star quality and he has been lighting up the scoresheet in the NCAA tournament, with 36 points in 34 games overall in 2021-2022. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he made the jump to the NHL next season. Flames fans are going to fall in love with this guy. Chris Fekete

February 2021 – A New York native, Coronato is having a huge season for the Chicago Steel of the USHL as a first-year draft eligible. His 24 goals and 27 assists in just 28 games are good enough for second in league scoring, just behind teammate and Montreal Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell. That kind of production is tough to ignore, even if Coronato is one of the older players in his draft class. Already dominating in the USHL, he will be looking to make an impact in the NCAA next season when he begins his collegiate career at Harvard University.

Though he isn’t the biggest player, Coronato plays something of a powerful, straight-ahead style of hockey. He has good speed when presented with space to generate a head of steam but his ability to move laterally while handling the puck leaves something to be desired. He can get caught on his heels when standing still, limiting his body control and ability to transfer his weight which leads to a slow first step and lack of acceleration. Mobility concerns aside, Coronato is an intriguing offensive player with good instincts and sense of spacing to go along with a heavy wrist shot. He makes good reads in the offensive zone, often fading out of coverage up high before jumping back into a soft spot at just the right time to receive a pass and get a shot off. He also has good vision and does well to scan the play with his head up, with or without the puck, consistently finding teammates in space. Coronato is short but stocky for his age and displays good strength protecting the puck, often keeping defenders on his back on the cycle while looking to make a play. Despite his lack of foot speed, he forechecks well with an active stick and regularly disrupts breakouts to turn the play back the other way. There is a lot to like about Coronato’s game but he needs to add some quickness to his skill set in order to take full advantage of his offensive instincts at the next level. Nick Richard
