May 2023 – Matej Blumel had a strong training camp for the Dallas Stars, as he made it to the final round of cuts. Though he did not make the Opening Day roster, he had a really good start for the Texas Stars. This earned him a call up not long after, where he would score his first NHL goal during his second game of a six-game stretch. He would later be sent back down, where has been a scoring weapon for the Texas Stars. – Taylor Newby

May 2023 – Blumel did indeed sign as a free agent – by the Dallas Stars. His AHL debut was fantastic, kicking off his North American debut season with a seven-game points streak (11 points). He was called up in November for a six-game stint and given sheltered minutes. Possession metrics indicate that there is still quite a bit of work to do in terms of his defense. Still very young, and definitely worth keeping an eye on. – Dobber

April 2022 – Blümel represented his country Czechia in Men’s Worlds in Tampere, Finland. He was a steady top-6-player and one of the leading forwards for his country. He notched 4 goals and 4 assists in 10 games. His great speed and good production were very promising and I believe he’s going to get signed as he’s an UFA now, after Edmonton didn’t sign him. I see Blümel as a potential 3rd liner for some NHL team. Eetu Siltanen

October 2020 – It is early in the season but Blümel is off to a good start with HC Dynamo of the Czech league where he has recorded two assists in four games compared to the five points in 31 games last year. The young Czech winger is a project at this point and along way from being considered for an NHL role. It was likely to be a couple more seasons before Edmonton knows what they have in this player. Jameson Ewasiuk

January 2020 – Edmonton’s fourth-round pick in 2019 was committed to the University of Connecticut but opted to return to the Czech Republic after two seasons in the USHL instead. Playing for HC Dynamo Pardubice of the Czech Extraliga, Blümel has recorded three goals and four points in 25 games played. The young Czech also played for his country at the World Junior Championship where he recorded one goal in five games. Blümel will turn 20 in May and should still be considered a project pick at this point. Jameson Ewasiuk

June 2019 – The Oilers selected Blümel with the 100th pick in the 2019 draft. Blümel went undrafted in 2018 but saw his numbers spike in his second season with Waterloo of the USHL. Last year he recorded a solid 30 goals and 60 points in 58 games compared to the eight goals and 18 points in 50 games the season prior. The young Czech winger plays with pace and brings energy to the ice. He has good speed and can be a bit of a pest at times. Defensively, he has been utilized on the penalty kill and knows how to create short handed chances. Blümel is off to the University of Connecticut next season and will likely need two or three years there before being close to pro ready. Jameson Ewasiuk
