October 2022 – Chromiak was assigned to AHL Ontario to wrap up his first NHL training camp with the Kings. The Czech forward has been one of the fastest risers within the organization over the last two years and will look to continue that trend in his first professional season. Chromiak scored 44 goals and 86 points in 2021-22, playing alongside Shane Wright for the Kingston Frontenacs. He is clearly an offensive talent on the rise, and if he can continue to elevate his offence as he did in junior, he could find himself with an opportunity to play games at the NHL level sooner than later. June 2022 – Chromiak torched the OHL this past season for the Kingston Frontenacs where he put up 86 points across just 60 games played. He is extremely strong on the puck when he has it on his stick and is not afraid to go dig the puck out in scrums along the boards. A natural shooter, Chromiak is dangerous from the edges with a lethal wrist shot. He has a quick release and can get into the open lanes to shoot or pass. Chromiak is strong on the backcheck as well, using his stick to break up plays and can pick the pocket of the opposition with little error, which bodes well for his game adapting to the NHL level. Chromiak projects to become a middle-six player when he cracks the NHL lineup with time on a power-play unit, but we can expect to see him dress for the Reign in 2022-23 as he continues his ascent through the ranks. April 2021 – Chromiak has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Ontario Reign after recent news that the OHL season has been officially canceled. The forward has spent all season on loan in Slovakia and has scored 19 points in 32 games with HK Dukla Trencin. This contract should be telling of Chromiak’s development and if he does well could earn himself an entry-level deal. He will require quarantine before suiting up for the Reign but will likely get a look in the team’s top six with some power-play time considering his goal-scoring ability. Julian Mongillo
December 2020 – The 18-year-old has been slotted onto the team’s second line for Team Slovakia at the 2021 World Junior Championships. The winger has a great shot and will need to use it to generate offense if Slovakia has any chance to make noise this tournament. He has only been able to pot one goal through the team’s first three games but did score his lone goal against a strong Canada side. If the OHL season does not start up, Chromiak will find himself back in his native Slovakia on loan where he has five points in eight games with HK Dukla Trencin. Julian Mongillo
October 2020 – Martin Chromiak was taken second overall by the Kingston Frontenacs in the 2019 CHL import draft after being labeled as a prodigy back in his native Slovakia. He was on pace to lead the Frontenacs in scoring last season with 33 points through 28 games played. His strong hockey IQ and shooting ability make him excel offensively but his skating ability and defensive game are a work in progress. Chromiak may have fell further in the draft than some may have expected and his skillset can make him a steal in the fifth round if he can improve on the finer details of his game. Julian Mongillo
October 2020 – Martin Chromiak was taken 128th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft. Tony Ferrari
April 2020 – Stepping right into the OHL and onto Shane Wright’s line in Kingston, Chromiak didn’t disappoint. He almost instantly gelled with Wright and Zayde Wisdom forming one of the more dangerous lines in the second half of the OHL season. While there has been some trepidation that Chromiak’s scoring rate was inflated by playing with Wright, the fact of the matter is that Wright’s scoring rate rose when Chromiak arrived. The two players clearly benefitted from each other and that bodes well for Chromiak. He doesn’t drive a line on his own but the young Slovakian forward is an excellent complimentary piece that has the intelligence, skating, and skill to play with high-level players. Chromiak has a very good shot and doesn’t hesitate to use it. He sees the ice well and finds teammates regularly. Chromiak looks like a player that a team could find in the second or third round of the 2020 NHL Draft and play higher in the lineup than initially expected. Tony Ferrari
January 2020 – After starting the season in the Slovakian Extraliga and being cut from the World Juniors team, Chromiak has decided to take his talents to Canada. The 17-year-old winger will play the rest of this season with Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL. Kingston drafted him second overall in the CHL Import Draft, and after a few months of delay, they are finally getting the player they wanted. Jokke Nevalainen
December 2019 – Chromiak currently has four goals and five points in 26 games for Dukla Trenčín in Tipsport Liga in Slovakia, but his game shows a lot more than that. He is not the biggest guy out there and will never be, but he is able to use his body properly to create space for himself and his linemates. He has great speed and a great shot. He uses those attributes properly in every single shift he plays. He is really dangerous when given a proper chance and minutes to do his thing – which he is not getting in Dukla as of late. He is averaging just above eight minutes of ice time this season in a bottom-six role. And in his last six games, he has averaged just above three minutes of ice time. That is really bad for his development. But when he is given the minutes and opportunity, he can flourish offensively. Just like he did in the summer during the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he was the best player on the team and was the leading scorer for Slovakia with two goals and five points in four games.
Last season, Chromiak made his debut in Tipsport Liga as a 16-year-old after an amazing performance in the under-20 league where he had 22 goals and 46 points in 39 games. He had one assist in two games last season up with Dukla, and he also appeared in Slovak uniform on several international tournaments since the summer of 2018. He was a point-per-game player in his first appearance at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup a few days before his 16th birthday. He also appeared at the World Under-18 Championship where he had two goals and three points in seven games playing a top-six role.
There is a lot to like about Chromiak’s game. He has very good speed, great ability to use his body in important situations, and a bomb of a shot. He also has that technicality and crisp into his offensive game, where he can elevate his game when necessary to help his team win. His two-way game is also quite good, and the defensive side of things has developed nicely over the last year and a half. That side of things was not really good before but he is making strides to make it better. However, there are still holes in his game that need to be addressed. He can be inconsistent at times, and maybe his on-ice effort could be better at times as well. His playmaking abilities are also a thing that I question quite often, but he is working on that part of his game as well and is getting better with time. There is lots of potential with Chromiak to be a very good goal-scorer at the highest level. Samuel Tirpák
