Daxon Rudolph

July 2026 – Buffalo delivered the night’s first surprise, taking Rudolph fourth overall as the first defenseman off the board. Central Scouting had him fifth among North American skaters, so the pick was not baseless, but few expected a defenseman to come off this early. The Sabres had traded Bowen Byram to Chicago to acquire the selection, then replaced him with a younger version of the same archetype. Rudolph drives value with his shot and his feet: a heavy, accurate point release that already works as a power-play weapon, and a smooth, efficient stride that lets him rush the puck and recover position in a few strides. He posted 78 points (28 goals, 50 assists) and a plus-32 in 68 games for Prince Albert, third among WHL defensemen, then tied for the playoff points lead with 27 in 19 games on a run to the WHL Final. Scouts floated a Zach Werenski comparison at the combine, which captures the offensive ambition.

He honors a commitment to the University of Denver this fall, so his fantasy arrival sits in 2027 or later, but a right-shot, power-play-quarterbacking blueliner who scores in bunches is exactly the kind that pays off in points leagues. Andrew Epps

June 2026 – A real shock happened at the draft with Rudolph being the first defenseman taken in the 2026 draft, and the fourth overall selection. The Sabres may have just traded for a better version of Byram, who they traded away for this selection. Pat Quinn

October 2025 – Rudolph continues to establish himself as one of the premier all-around defensemen in the CHL. The Prince Albert Raiders blueliner, selected first overall in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, brings the ideal mix of size, poise, and intelligence. His rookie campaign saw him produce 41 points in 64 games, and he’s followed it up with six points through five games to open the 2025-26 season.

Rudolph excels through efficiency and decision-making. In the defensive zone, he uses reach and body positioning to close off lanes, retrieve pucks cleanly, and initiate transition with composed outlets. His confidence with the puck and ability to break the forecheck make him an elite transition driver. Offensively, his heavy shot and vision make him a threat on the power play, while his skating stride allows him to cover ice effectively at both ends. With his physical maturity, mobility, and hockey sense, Rudolph profiles as a future top-pair NHL defenseman capable of anchoring a blue line for years. Owen Hilsinger

Preliminary Rankings-Rudolph is one of, if not the best, 1-on-1 defenders in the class. He stifles attacking players with elite stick work, gap control, and physicality. He already has an NHL frame at 6-1 and 195 lbs. Offensively, Rudolph’s playmaking is solid, and he has flashes of brilliance with his passing. His shot is a heavily underrated aspect of his game and could surprise many people this coming year. For Rudolph to improve upon his current ranking, he will need to get quicker feet and be stronger on his edges. His upside is a high-end two-way top-pairing defenseman with a floor as a bottom-four shutdown defender.-James Connelly

August 2025 – Former WHL Draft first-overall pick, Rudolph is another highly-touted name among Canada’s exceptional 2026 defence class. Rudolph had two goals at the Hlinka in August, maintaining a prolific offensive run from his rookie season in the WHL that included 12 points in 11 playoff games.

Rudolph is an aggressive two-way defender on both sides of the puck. He stifles puck carriers early in the rush, denies his blueline, and harangues his checks with a constantly probing defensive stick. Offensively he’s willing to jump into the play to use his heavy shot. He can be very shifty with the puck, both in transition and while walking the offensive blueline.
