Cameron Whynot

June 2023 – Cameron Whynot had a good regular season and improved his season totals and surpassed last season’s point totals. He played a bigger role with Halifax this season and was doing a terrific job. The concern on why he never got signed was because of how he was during the playoffs. He didn’t continue his success from the regular season into the playoffs, and it looked like he was second-guessing himself on passes and decision-making. He didn’t look like himself lots of times. He was also getting silly penalties, which didn’t help his case for earning a pro contract. Whynot is still eligible for one more year of junior, where he will be surrounded by another good team in Halifax. Carson Klein

April 2022 – Whynot is currently injured. To date, in the QMJHL with the Halifax Mooseheads, he has scored four goals and 13 assists in 43 games played. Chris Fekete

July 2021 – Whynot was selected in the third round, 89th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft. Dave Hall

April 2021 – Whynot has been a key player for the Mooseheads in his draft year, playing regularly on both special teams units and averaging over 22 minutes per game. He has been fairly productive as well, coming in just behind 2021 first-round pick Justin Barron in scoring among Moosheads defenders.

Whynot fits the mold of a modern day, two-way defender with his smooth skating stride and ability to defend in transition. He appears more rangy than his height would suggest, employing a long stride to cover lots of ice in a short time and using his good reach to break up plays on the defensive side of the puck. That reach is one of his greatest tools when defending oncoming puck carriers, using his stick to angle and guide opponents wide where he is able to disrupt the play or force a low danger shot attempt. He plays a tight gap and likes to smother breakout options in the neutral zone, shutting down passing lanes proactively. He is able to be aggressive defending in transition because of his ability to recover on the occasions when he gets beat or makes a poor read, utilizing good edge work to complete quick pivots and skate with attackers. In my viewings of Whynot, he has been a very efficient passer who makes quick decisions to turn play in his team’s favor in short order. Perhaps the most underappreciated parts of his game are his spatial awareness and off-puck reads in the offensive zone. Whynot displays a strong understanding of not only where he needs to be, but where he needs to go, and can cause problems for defensive zone coverages with the way he activates inside the offensive blue line, pulsing in and out of space to create passing lanes. The most notable concern I have with Whynot’s game is that he isn’t overly assertive using his body to box out in front of his net or win board battles, but he is still quite proficient coming away with contested pucks. He will have to continue to add strength as he develops but Whynot has the mobility and defensive instincts that will make him enticing to NHL teams on draft day. Nick Richard
