June 2022 – The Predators have officially announced the signing of Finnish winger and former Ottawa Senators sixth-round pick Markus Nurmi. Nurmi, 24, is a hardworking winger who enjoys creating chances from the hash marks and below. At 6-4, he has a big frame but possesses soft hands, which you would not expect by looking at him. He did play with fellow Preds prospect Juuso Parssinen for TPS in Liiga, and do not be surprised to see them paired together in Milwaukee. Nurmi may fight for a roster spot come training camp but for now, expect him to start in the AHL and work his way up. Curtis Rines

June 2020 – Nurmi didn’t get signed by the June first deadline, making him a free agent.  Jokke Nevalainen

January 2020 – The sixth-round pick from the 2016 draft has signed a two-year extension with TPS in the Liiga. He has expressed his desire to stay with TPS and develop as he helps the franchise to greater heights so his NHL prospects seem to have dwindled quite a bit. The Ottawa Senators have until June to sign him or else they will forfeit his NHL rights. Pat Quinn

October 2019 – The 2016 sixth-round pick seems to have solidified his spot in the Liiga. He has not been able to put any solid production together but he has shown signs at times that the skill is there. Still unsigned, he could become an afterthought in the Senators organization if he doesn’t have a strong season and at least show growth. Pat Quinn

June 2019- Nurmi completed his season with TPS seeing his point total fall to 12 from last season’s 21. While being mentioned as a noteworthy prospect by GM Pierre Dorion during the season, Nurmi remains unsigned and could find himself on the outside looking in with his pro career in North America. At this stage, he projects to little more than an AHL depth player, if that. Jordan Deshane

December 2018- Although not putting up huge numbers for TPS this season, Nurmi has caught the attention of Ottawa Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion, quoting “One guy that’s fairly intriguing is Markus Nurmi. He’s having a good year for TPS (SM-liiga) and we hope to sign him at some point in time near the end of the year”. Once signed, he will no doubt be able to play a big role for AHL Belleville given his experience at the pro level. Jordan Deshane

July 2018 – Nurmi spent his first full season in the top league in Finland competing for TPS, a team stocked with past and future NHLers, and has a strong showing. In 51 games, Nurmi found the back of the net 10 times and added 11 assists to finish seventh on the team in scoring among forwards. Across the Liiga he was ninth in scoring by a U21 player and tied for seventh in goals. He’s progressed quite nicely since being a late round pick a couple of years ago. There’s not much in the pipeline on the right side in terms of competition for Nurmi so there is definitely a wide open opportunity for him. With one year remaining on his current contract he’ll remain with TPS for 2018-19, but look for the Senators to get him over to North America at the end of the upcoming season.  Brad Phillips

January 2018 – Markus Nurmi has taken another step in the right direction over the past year. The Finnish sniper recently transitioned to the Liiga to start the year with TPS, and has shown some flashes of promise racking up 4 goals and 5 assists in 32 games as a 19 year old in the Finnish men’s league. As a result of his promising performances, Nurmi was noticed and invited to the U20 World Junior Championship in Buffalo with Finland. He played very well in a limited role notching a goal and 2 assists in 5 games with the Finnish squad. Nurmi has been developing quite nicely as of late and the results are starting to show. Marcus Griep

February 2017 – The rangy Finnish sniper has kept up his goal-scoring ways during his third Junior A SM-Liiga campaign with TPS U20. Skating in 21 games, Nurmi led the team with 10 goals and 21 points and was named SM-Liiga player of the month in November. This strong play earned him a callup to the big league, where he suited up for three Liiga games with TPS but was held off the scoresheet. He has since been sent to the second-tier Mestis, where he’s played eight games, scoring one goal. Nurmi is a project, but there is definitely some potential with the sixth-rounder. Signed to a two-year extension in January, he won’t be seen in North America until the 2019-20 season at the earliest. Brad Phillips

July 2016 – With their last pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, the Ottawa Senators took 6’4 Finnish forward Markus Nurmi. He had a productive and strong season for TPS U20, scoring 19 goals and 17 assists. He was also a part of gold winning Finnish team at the U18 World Championship tournament. Nurmi is an effective finisher thanks to a quick, sneaky release on his wrist shot. He’s dangerous around the net. He’s very hard to knock off the puck down low and along the boards because he really utilizes his size well.  Nurmi is a hard-working player who doesn’t take many shifts off and he also possesses good skating mechanics, though some improvement will be needed in that aspect. He was very solid at Senators’ development camp In July and scored two goals in scrimmage. Marco Bombino
