Cameron Schmidt

July 2026 –  Development camp gave a live look at both halves of the Schmidt profile after his 51-goal, 100-point WHL season split between Vancouver and Seattle. The skill was obvious from Day 1, when he toe-dragged through two defenders while cutting wide across the front of the net, and his quick hands and feet made him one of the two most dynamic forwards in the building alongside Dylan Hryckowian. The counterpunch arrived just as fast. On the very next rep he was bodied off the puck, and by Day 3 the book on him had tightened across the group: push him to the outside, lean on him, and deny the space his speed needs. He started on the top line in the mini game and kept creating, but the lesson of the week is that he will always have to be faster and smarter than the guy across from him, and the strength curve is now the swing variable in his projection, not the toolkit. His shot and skating remain the best in the Dallas pipeline. The item to track this summer is his contract, with a June 1, 2027 sign-by date, and where his development year lands in the new CHL and NCAA environment. Andrew Epps

April 2026 — Schmidt’s post-draft season has been dominant. He was tracking at roughly 1.5 points per game with the Vancouver Giants before Seattle acquired him at the WHL trade deadline on January 5 for a massive return: Kaleb Hartmann, two first-round picks, a conditional second, a conditional fourth, and a fifth. That price tag tells you how the CHL views his production. He barely blinked after changing teams. A 21-game point streak with the Thunderbirds (16 goals, 20 assists) pushed him to the top of the WHL scoring race, and he hit both his 100th WHL goal and 200th career WHL point in back-to-back games during his first week in Seattle. He closed the regular season by reaching the 50-goal and 100-point marks in the final week, including a hat trick (his third of the season) in an overtime win over Portland. He was named WHL Player of the Week after going 6-0-6 with a plus-5 in three games to clinch a playoff berth for the Thunderbirds. The tools are the same ones that made him a first-round talent who slid to the third round: elite acceleration, a quick, deceptive release from either flank, and the ability to fire between strides off the rush. What has grown this season is the playmaking. His assist rate has climbed meaningfully, reflecting more cross-slot feeds, give-and-go plays, and offensive zone creativity instead of just pure rush goals. The size (5-8, 158 pounds) and off-puck detail questions from his draft year have not disappeared, but 50 goals in a WHL season is production that very few players of any size reach. Dallas’s director of player development, Rich Peverley, compared him to Logan Stankoven during development camp, and the scoring profile supports that ceiling. One more WHL season with Seattle in 2026-27 is likely before a move to Cedar Park. For fantasy, this is a player with realistic top-six scoring upside if the translation holds. — Andrew Epps

November 2025 – Schmidt has come back to the Vancouver Giants and pushed his stock even higher. Through 20-plus games, he is tracking at roughly a point and a half per night, with 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points, leading the Giants in both goals and total scoring while also sitting near the top of their power play goal and assist charts.  He already has multiple statement nights, including a four-point game with two goals and two assists in a 7-4 loss to Edmonton and a late breakaway winner against Prince George that was featured as a highlight clip by both the Giants and WHL channels. Compared to last season, his assist rate has climbed, which reflects more give-and-go plays and cross-slot feeds rather than just attacking wide off the rush. The size concerns and off-puck detail questions from his draft year have not disappeared, but this start reinforces that his speed and shot are still driving top-of-the-lineup junior results and keeping a real top-six NHL scoring outcome on the table if the rest of his game matures. August 2025 – Public perception and professional pundits projected Schmidt squarely in the first round. He was ranked 30th by Dobber Prospects, 22nd by Elite Prospects, and 19th by TSN.

NHL managers leaned heavily into size at the 2025 draft. The Stars recouped a lot of value when they landed the quick-shooting, deceptive winger — standing 5-8 — late in the third round. The speedy forward is known to take any puck in stride and turn it into a lethal chance, whether by way of his quick, accurate shot or his offensive awareness. He’s deceptively fast; his agility makes him elusive and gives him an edge in finding open ice.

Jim Nill is attempting to mine elite offensive upside far later than it should be available – the same kind of upside they have found in past picks like Stankoven and Johnston. Schmidt immediately adds juice to the forward core in Dallas, and if developed properly, he has the upside to be a top-six contributor. Arden McLeod

Final Rankings – Schmidt is almost certainly the most purely skilled player available in this range, a statement that would still be true almost anywhere in the first round. Despite his high-end skating, shooting and handling, Schmidt is small and struggles to play off teammates or drive the middle of the ice.—Luke Sweeney

January 2025 – Cameron Schmidt has pretty much everything you’d want out of a smaller player. He’s got blazing speed, lightning-quick acceleration, and tight edges, making Schmidt already one of the best skaters in the CHL. Schmidt’s early’ offensive dominance has been thanks in large part to that skating. Either receiving a stretch pass or leading the rush himself, Schmidt’s able to create a lot of clean looks for himself in the WHL. His shot is also undeniably dangerous. He’s got a quick snapper with a deceptive release that he loves to flash in transition. Schmidt’s wrister and one-timer are both powerful—potential NHL-level—weapons, making him a threat from either flank. With his hands and vision, Schmidt also has legitimate playmaking skill. He stretches the ice, pushes the pace and plays with a chip on his shoulder. What’s not to like?

Admittedly, Schmidt’s approach hasn’t translated as well to stages where he’s playing a smaller, often secondary role. Against steeper competition and playing with more talented peers, Schmidt hasn’t had as much space to work with, as many lapses to capitalize on, and, maybe most importantly, as many puck touches. That certainly poses a problem, not just at the NHL, but at any pro level. Going purely off tools, there’s a strong argument for taking Schmidt over all but a few players. The only worry is about his fit in an NHL top six.- Luke Sweeney
