Brett Seney

May 2022 – Seney had a fantastic season, albeit in the AHL, leading the Marlies in scoring with 17 goals and 42 assists in 62 games. He also got into a couple of games with the Leafs but was never really in consideration for a regular spot on the NHL roster. A pending unrestricted free agent, Seney will likely seek an opportunity to break through with another NHL club this offseason. Nick Richard

July 2021 – Seney has signed a one-year (two-way) deal with the Maple Leafs. Dave Hall

March 2020 – Seney’s production slowed some but still wound up averaging about a point every other game over his past 21 games. He is enjoying a much better season after spending most of 2018-19 with New Jersey. Next season expects to be very pivotal.  Chris Wassel 

January 2020 – Seney is enjoying a nice season again in Binghamton with 33 points in 40 games. That would put him on a solid 60-point pace. As the AHL Devils have heated up so has Seney. During this hot streak, the winger is right around a point a game. A little better play and magically the points come.  Chris Wassel

April 2019 — Seney spent all of March in Binghamton and then was called up for the season finale against Florida on the 6th. He has one year left on his current deal. The Binghamton-New Jersey shuttle may happen again next season. Chris Wassel

March 2019 – Seney showed nearly point a game pace with Binghamton late in the 2017-18 season and then did it again to start the 2018-19 season. The result was a call-up and that lasted 50 games. Seney was sent back to Binghamton on February 24th to get more ice time and work on some fundamentals. He averaged right around a point a game once again. In the NHL, he gets a point about once every four games. That is not awful for a fourth liner playing ten minutes a night. Seney’s big issue is engagement. He must overcome the timid tendencies he shows and keeps playing full steam ahead. A speedy forward must not be afraid to use it anywhere – in corners, down the middle of the ice, etc. The middle-six forward spot still appears to be his upside. Chris Wassel

July 2017 – In addition to being named to Hockey East’s annual All-Academic Team for the second time, Seney earned an invite to Devils Development Camp beginning July 11. He’ll likely be back at Merrimack in the fall before pursuing the pro game in 2018-19. Kevin Wickersham March 2017 – the Tenth-ranked University of New Hampshire ousted Seney’s Merrimack Warriors in their best-of-three first round Hockey East Tournament series, bringing a close to his best collegiate season yet. Skating on a line with recent Capitals’ free agent-signee Hampus Gustafsson and the late season Finnish freshman sensation Sami Tavernier, Seney finished with career highs in assists (21), shots (81), points (31) and plus-minus (+10). 2017-18 will likely see him return to Merrimack for his senior year. January 2017 – Seney, a diminutive Merrimack University forward possesses impressive puck handling skills and speed to burn. Leading the Warriors in scoring this campaign (six goals, 11 assists in 21 games), he has put his quickness and passing acumen to good use rather than relying on shot volume, as he is presently only 8th on the team in shots taken with 35. In this, his third year at Merrimack, Seney has been a consistent force, totaling 26 points on 56 shots in each of his two prior NCAA seasons. With his fleetness, he is able to outskate and out-maneuver Hockey East defenders regularly, as his goals and assists frequently occur on the rush or as a product of defenders and goalies overplaying him as he slips a deft pass to a teammate. As with many small, quick players, Seney would do well to bulk up to help him meet the physical demands of hockey at the next levels and develop defensively. He will likely spend four years playing the college game, giving him an extended opportunity to grow and add muscle prior to making the jump to the pros. Highly opportunistic and aware on the ice, he has expressed a desire to pattern his pro game after undersized Devils success stories Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias, as well as Patrick Kane and Tyler Johnson.
