The good news for the Pittsburgh Penguins? They still have elite core players including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Matt Murray who helped them win two straight Stanley Cups. The bad news for the NHL’s latest Lords of the Rings? Since hoisting the 2018 Cup, they’ve lost experienced players (and in most [...]

July 31-in-31: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins didn’t wait for the 2017 entry draft to start remaking the organization’s personnel. Expansion draft When the Vegas Golden Knights claimed Marc-Andre Fleury, it was the end of an era in Pittsburgh in which Flower (as he was affectionately known to teammates) helped the Pens to three Stanley Cups. The first-overall selection [...]

July 31-in-31: Columbus Blue Jackets

By |2018-06-12T11:10:14-04:00July 17th, 2017|Feature Story|

A talented team that seemed to have lost its way before getting back on track last season hopes it has taken steps to carry it even closer to its first Stanley Cup. The Blue Jackets roared back with 32 more points than the previous campaign to finish fourth overall in the league, resulting in the [...]

The electrifying yet maddeningly inconsistent Teemu Pulkinen has moved from one desert NHL team to another, being claimed by Vegas in the expansion draft from Arizona. His contract situation remains murky.   In two recent columns, I rambled about new RFAs and UFAs and whether their contract year performances helped or hurt their chances of [...]

By |2017-06-17T21:49:51-04:00June 17th, 2017|Prospects Rambling|

Talented yet underachieving blueliner Derrick Pouliot could be one of the new faces as Pittsburgh shoots for a third straight Stanley Cup? Will he seize the opportunity?   When Pittsburgh entered the NHL in 1967, I laughed. Calling yourselves Penguins doesn’t exactly conjure a virile image to stiffen the resolve of your fans and intimidate [...]

By |2017-06-11T14:47:09-04:00June 10th, 2017|Prospects Rambling|

Have a contract year like Viktor Arvidsson had for the Predators and you'll be celebrating like this, too.   Pro hockey players are judged by their performances every season, month, week, game and shift. Scrutiny intensifies, especially from GMs, during contract years. With free agency looming, a strong season could be the deciding factor that [...]
