April 2023 – Dyck had a less-than-stellar season in Swift Current, putting up a 3.62 GAA and .887 save percentage in 40 games this season. After the Broncos season, Dyck joined the Providence Bruins on an amateur tryout for their playoff run. Dyck won’t get any playing time, as he is just an insurance option, with Brandon Bussi being sent back and forth to Boston. Dyck has a long road to the NHL after disappointing seasons in the WHL and a bad showing in the preseason at Bruins development camp and the rookie tournament. He has a lot of goalies to jump on the depth chart once he gets to the pro game, so expect some extended time in the ECHL and AHL before he gets a chance at ever getting a shot with the parent club. Nate Duffett
July 2022 – Dyck has been selected by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. Nick Richard
June 2022 – Reid Dyck is an interesting goaltender to evaluate. From a statistical standpoint, one would think that he had a rough year (.884 in 23 WHL games, .855 in three WJC-U18 games). However, I think that if you asked him or the people who watched him closely, you would hear relatively positive things. Coming into the season, Dyck had only played eight WHL games. By the end of it, he had established himself as Swift Current’s starter for next year, had been named one of Team Canada’s top-three players at the U18 World Championships, and had impressed viewers at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.
From a technical standpoint, Dyck is a bit of a mixed bag. His strong edge work and relative fluidity in movement allow him to travel quickly and effectively. He is strong at traveling through the middle of the crease where necessary, appropriately adjusting his angle. He has quiet feet and hands, traveling around his net in a controlled manner, allowing himself to get set for shots before they are released. Dyck is a physically large goaltender who uses his size and athleticism to make saves. He is effective at sealing the bottom of the net and attacking pucks with his gloves on chances around the net. However, he tends to play very deep in his net, which leads to him getting beat cleanly due to the extra available space. In order to play at the next level and consistently save shots from higher-level shooters, he will need to ensure that he is regularly challenging the shooter to a greater degree. This additional range of motion may put some strain on his lateral movement, which will be something to keep an eye on.
Dyck will be a project goaltender for whoever drafts him this summer. His game will need some refining, but there are enough projectable tools there that I would feel comfortable using a mid-round pick on him. Stepping into his new role next year as Swift Current’s starter will be an important phase in his development, and one that I will be interested in keeping an eye on. Colin Hunter
