June 2024 – Despite his rookie season being cut short to just 33 games due to open stabilization surgery on his right shoulder, Matthew Poitras, a 20-year-old centerman, significantly impacted a Bruins team in need of center depth. He scored five goals and provided ten assists, showcasing his potential as a playmaker and occasional goal-scorer. With his return to Boston’s roster for the 2024-25 season, Poitras is poised to continue his impressive performance. John Gove
April 2023 – Poitras had a big development year in the OHL, nearly doubling his career-high in points with 16 goals and 79 assists in 63 games with Guelph. He has signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement to join Providence for the AHL playoffs. He will likely practice with the team while they make their Calder Cup run and return to Guelph next season for his final year, much like Brett Harrison did last season. The playmaking center’s potential must be exciting for the Bruins organization, as they will likely need a skilled center to fill out the NHL roster in the future. It is unclear how Poitras will adapt to the professional game, but the potential of him centering a line with someone like David Pastrnak is enough to make his fantasy value an exciting thing to monitor in the future. Nate Duffett
July 2022 – The Boston Bruins have selected Poitras in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, 54th overall. Nick Richard
December 2021 – Poitras is enjoying a solid rookie season in the OHL and sits inside the top-10 in league scoring among first-year draft-eligbles. His production, while respectable, doesn’t jump off the page but it’s the details in his game that make Poitras such an enticing prospect.
Poitras is a hard-working, offensively skilled forward who utilizes his quick hands and vision on both sides of the puck. He has all the requisite offensive tools; a strong release on his wrist shot, good vision and passing ability, and quick hands in traffic, but it’s the pro-level habits already present in his game that will help him excel at the next level. He protects the puck well on the cycle, takes great angles in pursuit, and consistently comes away with contested pucks. Poitras has a habit of baiting opposing players into poor decisions and jumping lanes at the perfect time, routinely capitalizing on mistakes by the other team. He makes strong reads off the puck and competes hard, laying out to block a shot or taking a hit to make a play. He may never put up huge point totals but Poitras does a lot of things well to create chances and drive play for his team. I think he has a pretty safe floor as a top-nine NHL forward and there is potential for him to become more than that. Nick Richard
