Ty Voit

June 2025 – Voit skated the 2024-2025 season with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, posting eight goals and 29 assists across 63 games. The development curve of the young winger has not gone as expected since he posted lofty totals in the OHL, albeit breaking the 100-point mark as an overager. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the fact that they allowed him to play in the ECHL this year versus the AHL, and that his point totals did not stand out at that level, one will wonder if he features well in the team’s plans. Voit only just turned 22, so he has plenty of youth left, but the development path is a strange one to consider when trying to assess fantasy value going forward. January 2024 – The injury bug has struck Voit once again. After starting his season late due to a shoulder injury suffered at Traverse City over the summer, Voit made his professional debut with the Newfoundland Growlers and scored eight points in five games. Voit was then called up to the Marlies where he suffered another shoulder injury in his AHL debut. After evaluation, Toronto announced that Voit will be undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery and will prepare to be ready for next season’s training camp. He has the skill but Voit has a long road ahead to become an option at the NHL level. Curtis Rines

May 2023 – Voit was one of the OHL’s most outstanding forwards in 2022-23. The Maple Leafs prospect scored 24 goals and led the OHL in assists with 81. He also helped Sarnia reach their first conference final in franchise history, where, unfortunately, they fell to the London Knights. However, he continued his strong play into the postseason with 16 points in 16 games. Voit has now joined the Toronto Marlies in the midst of their playoff run, where he is unlikely to see game time, but it will be good for him to spend time in a professional environment. Voit has the option to return to the OHL for his overage season, but it seems likely that the Maple Leafs will decide to begin his professional career full-time next season. The fifth-round draft pick still has a long way to go to get to the NHL, mostly due to his 5-9 frame. However, having such a productive year is a great sign for the current stage of his development. May 2022 – Voit had a spectacular season for the Sarnia Sting, leading the team in scoring by a wide margin with 26 goals and 54 assists in 67 games. He added another two goals and four assists in the Sting’s opening-round playoff defeat at the hands of the Windsor Spitfires. His regular season point totals were good enough for fourth best among all OHL players drafted in 2021, providing the Leafs with encouraging early returns on their 2021 fifth-round selection. Voit shifted back to playing center for most of the season and found great success driving offense from the middle but he still projects as more of a winger at the pro level. The Pennsylvania native won’t turn 19 years old until June, and another big season in the OHL could put him on the radar for the American squad at next year’s World Juniors. Already signed to a professional contract with the Leafs, he could also see time with the Marlies to close out the 2022-23 season, depending on how far Sarnia is able to go. Nick Richard

December 2021 – Voit has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 draft, Voit’s signing came perhaps a bit sooner than expected, but the Leafs have clearly been happy with his progress early in the 2021-22 season. He is still a couple of seasons away from making his professional debut but the contract is a nice reward for Voit and symbolizes the organization’s belief in him as a legitimate prospect. Nick Richard

December 2021 – After a year away from competitive hockey, Voit has returned with a vengeance through the early part of the 2021-22 season. He leads Sarnia in scoring with 29 points through 22 games and has been held off the scoresheet just three times so far this season. The Sting have also had Voit playing center more so far this year, and though he likely ends up on the wing at the pro level, his versatility has been an added bonus. It is still very early, but Voit is showing that he probably shouldn’t have been available when the Leafs selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. Nick Richard

July 2021 – Voit didn’t play in his draft year as the OHL season never got underway, but he tallied eight goals and 20 assists in 49 games during his OHL rookie season in 2019-20.

An undersized player, Voit has had a bit of a late growth spurt and added a couple of inches to his listed height from earlier in the season. He put his time to good use with OHL season on hold and will need to continue adding muscle to what is now a 5-10 frame. Voit is an entertaining player to watch, bringing plenty of quickness and energy with every shift. He flies around the ice and doesn’t shy away from the tough areas despite his small stature, using his size to his advantage to play between checks in the offensive zone. Playing a mature game for his age, Voit processes things quickly to identify his options in a timely manner and he has the vision to hit teammates with passes through layers of coverage. He always keeps his feet moving and works to make himself available for a return feed after dishing the puck to a teammate, making him a threat off the rush. Voit has looked dominant in flashes at the junior level but he won’t be able to get by on his raw skills so much as he climbs the ranks, and adding more strength to his frame will help him withstand the rigors of professional hockey. He should be a key contributor upon his return to Sarnia for the 2021-22 season and, in time, could develop into an energetic, middle-six winger capable of driving offense at the NHL level. Nick Richard
