November 2023 – Steeves had a strong second year with the Marlies, scoring 19 goals and 51 points in 65 AHL contests. He pushed for a spot on the Maple Leafs out of camp but unfortunately was cut due to the numbers game. However, Steeves has been off to a hot start thus far with six goals and 10 points in his first ten games of the season. Alongside Nick Robertson, the two have formed a formidable duo on the Marlies top-line. With the Maple Leafs depth scoring a major issue to start the season, Steeves should be a name to watch if they decide to look for a spark in their lineup. Curtis Rines

May 2022 – Steeves had a great first season of pro hockey despite missing time with various injuries throughout the year. His 23 goals and 23 assists through 58 games were good enough for third in scoring among all Marlies, and he even registered his first NHL point while getting into three games with the Leafs. Steeves proved to be a legitimate scoring threat at the AHL level and while he produced in a variety of ways, his one-timer from the top of the circle on the powerplay became an increasingly dangerous weapon as the season wore on. With his injury troubles hopefully behind him, he will be looking to take the next step with a strong showing at the Leafs’ training camp next fall. Already knocking on the door as a depth option, Steeves has the potential to grow into an NHL regular if he continues on this upward trajectory. Nick Richard

December 2021 – After suffering a shoulder injury in development camp that forced him to miss the beginning of the season, Steeves has had a strong start to his first professional season. He managed 12 points through his first 12 AHL games with the Marlies, and with the Leafs’ forward group depleted, he was rewarded with his first taste of NHL action.

Steeves is far from a finished product but the early returns on his signing have been encouraging and it appears the Leafs could have a future depth NHLer on their hands with their latest NCAA signing. Nick Richard

March 2021 – The Maple Leafs have signed 21-year-old NCAA forward Alex Steeves to a 3-year ELC.

Steeves put up 15 goals and 32 points in 29 games to lead the University of Notre Dame as a junior and earned a spot on the Big-10 2nd All Star team. He was previously undrafted primarily due to his size and skating, but he knows how to score goals and the Leafs organization has a good history of improving player skills when they see targets with potential hockey IQ. Toronto certainly have an interest in brainy prospects; Steeves was named to the Dean’s List in 2019-20 as a college freshman and sophomore. He is unlikely to be fantasy relevant in even the deepest leagues for the time being, wait and see how he is used in the AHL or ECHL before using a roster spot. Hayden Soboleski
