Observations:

January 2014 – Benn tallied his first career NHL penalty shot goal during the Stars’ 4-0 win over the Wild on Jan. 21. “[My last penalty shot was] probably my second or third year in the minors and I did that exact move, and it worked,” said Benn via the Stars official website. “It’s the only one I have, so I thought I would try it again.” Posting a plus-8 rating on the year, Benn has found himself back into a more consistent role in Dallas as he’s appeared in ten of the Stars’ eleven contests in the month of January. The 26-year old has logged in upwards of 17 minutes of ice-time per game, tallying 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 46 games played this season. Clayton Bailey

December 2013 – Seemingly one of coach Lindy Ruff’s most trusted options on the Stars’ backend to begin the season, Benn’s recent lack of production proves he has not locked up an NHL roster spot for the remainder of the season just yet. With rookie defensemen Kevin Connauton and Cameron Gaunce becoming more reliable options on a nightly basis, Trevor Daley’s return to the lineup could send the 26-year old into a healthy scratch role in Dallas. Despite riding an eight game pointless streak, he’s recorded a plus-4 rating in the month of December, tallying a total of six points (one goal, five assists) in 31 NHL games this season. Clayton Bailey

November 2013 – Appearing to have earned full trust from coach Lindy Ruff, Benn has appeared in all 16 games for the Stars this season. Logging upwards of 18 minutes of ice time per game in the last five contests, he currently ranks second on the team in shots on goal by defenseman (27). Benn recorded his first goal of the season on the power play where he has seen a significant increase in playing time from a season ago. Clayton Bailey

May 2013- The elder of the Benn brothers, finished up his season back in Cedar Park with the Texas Stars. He split time between the NHL and AHL in 2013, but with all the depth on defense in the Stars system, Jordie is most likely an injury replacement at best in the NHL long term. He may see some time in Dallas in the near term, but that will be short-lived with the likes of Oleksiak, Morrow, Connauton, and Gaunce waiting in the wings. Rex Doty

March 2013 – Benn is currently bouncing in and out of the NHL and was very instrumental for the Stars’ resigning his brother Jamie and preventing a prolonged contract battle. He was seeing more minutes during recalls earlier in the season, but his ice time is being cut due to the growth of fellow prospect Jamie Oleksiak. Jason Banks

November 2012 – Once again, is playing with Texas Stars of the AHL after being resigned for a single season by Dallas. If the NHL were to resume it would be expected Benn would be recalled as a sixth or seventh man. Dallas will likely try and keep Benn involved in the organization as long as Jaime is around and Jordie is not struggling, but his upside is rather hindered with more versatile and talented prospects like Brenden Dillon, Jaime Oleksiak, Philip Larsen and Jyrki Jokipakka in the system. Jason Banks

March 2012 – Benn is the brother to Dallas scoring stud Jamie. The older Benn took a unique route to the NHL via the BCHL with the Victoria Grizzlies and then ECHL and CHL. Benn is a hard-nosed defenseman who defends well and battles in the corners. Last season he made his AHL debut with Texas Stars and just made his biggest career step yet this season. He was called up to Dallas in 2012 and looks to keep his consistent defensive play in the big leagues. Russ Bitely

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Benn plays a solid defensive game and possesses a hard shot for the NHL.
