Ty Emberson

February 2023 – Emberson, seemingly a throw-in in the salary dump trade of defenseman Patrik Nemeth to Arizona last year, has put together a pretty nice season for the Hartford Wolf Pack, scoring 17 points in 44 games, to go along with a plus seven rating. Though we will have to wait and see if he is ever able to reach his ceiling of a third pair NHL defenseman, the former Wisconsin Badgers captain has already surpassed his 2021-2022 point totals with the Coyotes’ affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners, and is proving to be a nice depth piece for the Rangers organization. July 2022- Emberson has been traded to the New York Rangers for defenseman Patrick Nemeth, a 2025 second-round pick and a future conditional pick. The basis of the trade is it helps New York gain some cap space by relieving Nemeth’s $2.5 million cap hit the next two years. The Rangers gain a decent prospect in Emberson though. His first pro season he spent 2021-22 with Tucson in the AHL, finishing with four goals and 11 points in 58 games. While Tucson was one of the worst AHL clubs last year, Emberson was one of their most consistent performers. Interesting fact and possible reason New York targeted him in this deal, Emberson was current Ranger defenseman K’Andre Miller’s blueline partner at Wisconsin in college. Keith Duggan

April 2021- The Coyotes have announced they signed Emberson to an entry-level contract. He’ll report to Tucson and after quarantining, should see some time with the Coyotes AHL team. The 20-year-old finishes his three-year Wisconsin career at 9-25-34 and 69 PIM in 101 career games in college. Emberson was named team captain at the beginning of the 2020-21 season, racked up four goals and 13 points in 31 games, along with six PIM. He was named to the Big Ten All-tournament team, was an Academic All-Big Ten and an honorable mention All-Big Ten. Emberson is considered more of a stay-at-home defenseman, who is good on the penalty kill but as of right now isn’t someone to get excited about fantasy wise. In deep leagues that count blocked shots and hits would be his main value at the moment. Keith Duggan

October 2020- While not really doing much offensively for Wisconsin, one goal and nine points in 33 games, Emberson was still a valuable member of the team. He allowed his defense partner, Rangers pick K’Andre Miller to play a more offensive style while Emberson was more defensively focused. His 62 blocked shots ranked second on the team, 27th in the nation while his 53 PIM’s lead the club. Emberson won the Fenton Kelsey Jr./Mike Richter Most Competitive Player team award. An excellent leader, he was named an alternate captain midway through last year’s campaign and was appointed team captain for the 2020-21 season. Keith Duggan

December 2019- One of the last cut’s for Team USA last year after being part of the selection camp leading up to the 2019 World Junior Championship, Emberson has been named to this year’s squad. He’s expected to play with fellow Wisconsin Badger and usual defense partner, New York Rangers prospect K’Andre Miller. Keith Duggan

August 2019- After two solid years with the U.S. National Team Development Program, the Coyotes drafted Emberson in the third round, 73rd overall in the 2018 draft. Playing for that program, Emberson was often overshadowed by more hyped teammates but was an important part of the team. He got big minutes on the penalty kill and routinely played against the other team’s top lines. He showed some offense but really didn’t see much time on the power play. Now, playing for University of Wisconsin, his freshman season can be summed up very similar to his time with the USNTDP. He played a very solid, reliable and consistent year, overshadowed by his more hyped teammates like Rangers first-round pick K’Andre Miller and Fylers selection Wyatt Kalynuk. He showed some offense, four goals and 12 points in 37 games, but saw almost no time on the power play. Emberson was often paired with Miller, letting the Ranger pick play a more offensive game while he was more defensively focused. Emberson is a good skater, playing a mobile game but also plays physical, throwing a big hit from time to time. He also ranked third on Wisconsin with 63 blocked shots. Emberson was very impressive at the USA Hockey World Junior Summer Showcase and looks to be a favorite to make the main team for this winters tournament. Keith Duggan
