Yegor Zamula

June 2023 – The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed Zamula on May 2, 2023, to a one-year, one-way contract extension. He will no longer be exempt from clearing waivers if he doesn’t make the 2023-24 NHL roster, which may be easier said than done after a late-season shoulder injury resulted in surgery to end his 2022-23 season. Although he should be ready for training camp this fall, it could take some time to regain his form. Mark Henry 

June 2022 – Serving as one of Lehigh Valley’s primary defensemen, Zamula played 58 games in the AHL last season while receiving ten games in the NHL with the Flyers towards the end. Recording four goals and 25 assists with the Phantoms, the 22-year-old undrafted defenseman failed to register a point with the Flyers. Zamula’s ice-time fluctuated during his ten-game stint in Philadelphia, playing between 11 and 22 minutes a night. Looking for him to add on a bit more muscle and weight, Philadelphia remains patient with Zamula. He is likely to start the 2022-23 season in the AHL, hoping to earn a call-up by mid-season. September 2020 – Zamula had a banner year for the time that he played. He looked like he belonged if he did not flourish wherever he played this past season. He is expected to suit up for Lehigh Valley in the coming season. He has been well worth the investment so far, although he will likely be a season or two away from getting regular playing time at the NHL level. While his decision making at the WHL level was very good, we’ll get a better idea of where he’s at against tougher competition in the coming campaign. Edric Joseph

February 2019 – While Zamula’s game is not without its flaws, he has been a fortunate find for the Flyers when they opted to sign him out of the Flyers Rookie Camp in the fall. In order for his offensive flair to be impactful, it comes at the expense of him neglecting his defensive responsibilities. In time the hope is that he is able to better balance these conflicting responsibilities. Until then, his chief area of improvement is his ability to handle faster opponents in his own zone. As strong as his instincts are to be in the right place much of the time, in order to better manage NHL defensive assignments his skating must improve. That notwithstanding, he has the makings of a top-four defenseman so as long as he stays the course. Edric Joseph
