Kurtis MacDermid

April 2020 – The 6-5 rearguard has re-upped with the Kings after appearing in a career-high 45 games for the Kings this season. MacDermid signed a two-year deal that will see him become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2021-2022 season. It is important to note that this is not a two way deal for the 26-year-old blueliner so he will likely be an NHL regular next season. He does not hold much fantasy value unless besides being a penalty minute specialist. Julian Mongillo

February 2019 – Kurtis MacDermid has been recalled by the Los Angeles Kings as they look to fill the hole for a sixth defenceman left by the departure of Oscar Fantenberg who was dealt at the 2019 trade deadline. MacDermid has been a staple on the back end of the Reign all season long logging major minutes in all situations although his ability to rack up penalty minutes is not ideal. He will compete against Reign teammates Matt Roy and Sean Walker for the NHL job and perhaps his large 6’5 frame, tenacity, and physical play can give him a leg up on the others and provide a competitive edge to a team without much left to play for. September 2017 – After being a late scratch from training camp last year, MacDermid has captured the attention of the Kings’ brass. He is mean, plays a possession game, and can effectively skate or pass the puck out of the defensive zone. Intensity is his greatest asset, but also his biggest weakness, as he struggles to stay out of the penalty box. His offensive upside is limited but he makes up for that with physical intimidation, solid defensive play, and an incredible work ethic. MacDermid brings a functional toughness that is a rare commodity in the NHL, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him put on the Kings’ sweater for a few games this year. Jamie Barber

September 2016 – MacDermid has continued to progress and even surprised many as he leapfrogged some more highly touted defensive prospects. He played well for the Reign in 2015-16 scoring 16 points in 56 games, but the gritty side to his game might be more interesting, as he served 121 penalty minutes. Collecting penalties is not unfamiliar territory to MacDermid, as he also served a 12-game ban for a hit to the head of Matt Bailey this season, and had been suspended for eight games in the season prior for a hit to the head on Max Domi. Philip Kamhi

June 2015 – MacDermid improved in virtually every aspect of his game last season without sacrificing his trademark physicality. You could see his overall growth in his production—the 2012 free agent signee doubled his points scored from the previous season (from 19 to 40) in about the same amount of playing time. Still a bit of a project, the 6-5 defender is set to make his AHL debut this fall. Sheng Peng

December 2013 – MacDermid is a tough defenseman who knows how to encourage his opponent to drop the gloves. Not known for his offense, he is known for his ability to stand skaters up at the blue line and finish his checks. His skating skills were a concern but there has been a notable improvement in that area over the past two seasons. Some bigger offensive numbers would be a bonus for MacDermid but his presence on ice definitely deters the other team from getting rough at times. – Pete Richmire
