Blake Speers

September 2021- The Coyotes have signed Speers to a one-year, two-way contract. He only saw four games last year with Tucson before Speers suffered a season-ending injury. The Roadrunners were 4-0 with Speers in the lineup. With 151 career AHL games, Speers was signed to be a veteran leader on the young team. Keith Duggan

September 2020- Speers didn’t show a lot offensively with Arizona’s AHL affiliate Tucson, recording four goals and nine points in 32 games. Speers did play well defensively in a bottom-six role for Tucson, just more was expected from a player who was once considered a top prospects for New Jersey. The Coyotes showed confidence in him, signing him to a one-year, two-way contract in late August. Keith Duggan

March 2019 – Speers has regressed in his first two years with Binghamton in the AHL. This season, Speers has just eight points in 43 games. The +/- is not all that good either but to be fair, Binghamton has been one of the worst teams defensively in the entire league. His shot volume dipped to just one a contest. It is clear that Speers is going through the motions. The right winger is under contract for another season. Honestly, he still needs to get stronger on the puck. Chris Wassel

April 2017 – Fresh off the Soo Greyhounds’ six-game, Western Conference Semifinal loss to Owen Sound, the Devils assigned Speers to AHL Albany for postseason play. Speers further proved his mettle as a scorer with Sault Ste. Marie, recovering from his opening game broken wrist to finish with 15 goals and 19 assists in 30 regular season games and adding one goal and seven assists in 11 OHL playoff contests. He joins fellow Greyhound Colton White who was concurrently promoted to the A-Devils. Kevin Wickersham

March 2017 – Speers’ post-WJC scoring output has returned to last season’s promising levels, demonstrating full recovery from an opening-game broken wrist that caused him to miss over half of 2016-17. With 14 goals and 15 assists in just 25 Greyhound games, he ranks second on Sault Ste. Marie in average points per game (1.16) and has further developed his stickhandling in spite of the injury. Speers’ successful return has been a key factor in the club’s first-place standing, as it leads Windsor by six points in the OHL’s West Division with a 44-15-3-1 record, and ranks second in the league with 92 points, just three behind Erie. Kevin Wickersham

January 2017 – Speers’ injury-marred campaign took a turn for the better during the WJC, as he nailed a goal on his 20^th birthday helping Team Canada to advance victorious past the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. He also contributed two assists in the tournament. After starting the season with New Jersey out of training camp, playing three games without a point, Speers was returned to captain his hometown Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he broke his wrist in his initial game. Now, seemingly healthy, one hopes he returns to the more than point-per-game scoring pace he maintained over the 2015-16 and 2016-17 OHL campaigns. Kevin Wickersham

October 2016 – The 19-year-old had a strong pre-season and made the Devils to start the season. The 2015 third-round pick was just over a point-a-game player last season as captain for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Speers made the team with his good skating and strong puck skills, which will help him play anywhere in the lineup. He’s averaging just over 10 minutes a game and is a likely candidate to get sent back down to junior after nine games. Trevor Behrends

December 2015: Blake Speers was recently named the captain of the Greyhounds. He’s also the leading scorer with 11 goals and 23 assists in 33 games. Speers might not match his totals from last year due to the Soo losing some key players, but it’s encouraging to see him produce and become a leader on the team. Justin Nobre

June 2015 – Blake Speers was on one of the more stacked CHL teams in Sault Ste Marie and played a key role wearing an “A” as well as finish fourth overall on teams scoring. Speers is an offensive player that has a good motor and smart instincts. His offensive game is strong with clever puckhandling skills, an accurate shot, quick release, and strong playmaking skills all being above average. Speers is a bit of an undersized player and needs to get stronger given the game he plays which is more of a puck possession board heavy cycle game. Benjamin Gallant
