June 2018 – It’s been five years since Edmonton drafted Muir in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and since then things haven’t gone as well as they would have hoped. Last season with Western Michigan University, the big winger recorded just four goals and 12 points in 27 games. In his university career, Muir has played in 118 games and has recorded a disappointing 14 goals and 46 points. The Oilers have until August 15th to sign the big winger before he becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent. The Oilers lack winger depth but at this point it’s unclear as to whether or not Edmonton believes Muir can contribute in any kind of role at the pro level. Jameson Ewasiuk
October 2017 – In the 2015-16 season, the fourth rounder from 2013 had an under-par performance. Playing in 35 games, Muir only managed to put up two goals and six assists. The power-forward was hoping for a better performance in the 2016-17 season and that is what happened. Playing in 20 games, he put up two goals and nine assists. Now in his fourth year at Western Michigan University, the big bodied winger has played in three games putting up a goal and an assist. He’s a player who will need to continue proving himself at the next level if he hopes to have a future in the Oilers’ organization. Spencer Pomoty
March 2015 – Another long-term project for the Oilers, Muir possesses great size and a stellar combination of athleticism and tenacity to go along with it. He was drafted out of the Tier 1 Elite League in the United States, putting up 40 points in 37 games for Victory Honda. In the following season he skated for the Indian Ice of the USHL while putting up relatively modest numbers (41 points in 54 games). There is maturity to his game and his two-way play is extremely promising for such a young player. While no parts of his game will impress anyone, it is easy to see that he could easily develop into a responsible NHL forward at the conclusion of his NCAA career.
Currently, he is in his freshman year at the University of Western Michigan. Through 33 games, Muir has put up eight goals and 14 points while managing a plus-7 for the second last place Broncos. With Muir committed and a year under his belt, the player and team should improve greatly over the next three years. Tyler Thomson
