Aggressive Butterfly goalie who has NHL Backup upside

Nov 2020- Gillies signed with St Louis. – Joel Henderson

Mar 2019 – While Jon Gillies currently holds a 0.885 save percentage on the season, it is worth a note that since Juuso Valimaki has been assigned to Stockton near the end of January (14 game stretch) Gillies has a 0.913 save percentage. Goaltending in Stockton has been an issue all season but don’t throw out the player just yet. The defence was atrocious for the majority of the year and Jon has been much better as of late. He has not been stealing games for Stockton but certainly should not be eliminated as a backup option come 2019-20. – Joel Henderson

Nov 2018 – Gillies is said to be Day-to-day with a lower-body injury. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2018 – It really hasn’t been the start that Gillies has hoped for. Stockton has been giving up a ton of quality scoring opportunities and thus Gillies numbers don’t look great to begin the campaign. (Five games – 4.53GAA, 0.858s%) At this point though, Parsons numbers are even worse, so it gives some context. Gillies has been struggling a bit with his glove hand and also continues to work on his positioning and calming his movements. Rittich has been playing fine enough to make Gillies spend more time in Stockton. It was close between them in training camp. Rittich on a one-way deal though and Gillies’ one-way deal doesn’t kick in until next year- Joel Henderson

July 2018 – Flames made a qualifying offer to Jon Gillies. In the past, CGY GM Treliving has shown to desire an NHL vet in net but how last season panned out, this is the time for Gillies to impress. He unapologetically plays the way he wants to, using his size and strength to make saves others might not. If he can become more reliable on second effort saves and not let the occasional disaster goal in, he could grab a job in training camp and stay the whole year in the NHL. Joel Henderson

Mar 2018 – Gillies in back in the NHL. Initially he was sent down when Smith came back from injury, but Flames made a swap of Rittich and Gillies. Jon started 5 straight games for Stockton and posted a 0.920 save percentage over that span. Flames seem to still be evaluating what they have in Jon Gillies. – Joel Henderson

Mar 2018 – Due to a Mike Smith injury, Gillies has been able to start some games for Calgary. Coaching staff was also impressed at his poise and rewarded him with a few consecutive starts. Beyond some bad goals, the biggest issue Gillies has is his positioning. He’s flexibile and atheltic enough to adjust but at times he loses his net and his form. For someone who was rumored to be on the trade block at the deadline, he’s shown how his size and flexibility are still developing. He’s an NHL goalie; but he has some work left to become an everyday starter. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2017 – Now into December, Gillies has the net and is playing strong hockey. His GAA is down from last year (2.93 to 2.24) and his save percentage is in fine form (.910 to .926). The way the playing time has been distributed, it’s apparently the Calgary Flames feel that Gillies is the higher potential choice over Rittich. His time in the NHL will probably come soon enough, even if Rittich plays solid. – Joel Henderson

July 2017 – Gillies and net sharer David Rittich were each given matching one year, two-way contracts by the Flames organization. The decision to only offer Gillies a one-year deal can be looked at a multitude of ways. The most common is… CGY has plenty of options now. Calgary once again opted to grab two NHL goalies to try and be competative this year while also not sacrificing the current prospect pool. With the love that Tyler Parsons has been receieving lately, most have put Gillies to the way side, instead jumping on the Parsons train. It’s absolutely understandable. The reality is… Gillies is still closer to being NHL ready, and every organization would be thrilled to add a prospect G of his caliber. He could be a trade target in real life and in fantasy. – Joel Henderson

Feb 2017 – The month of January was a solid snapshot of his year so far. He posted a .907 save percentage with a 3.17 GAA in six starts and one relief effort. Keep in mind though Stockton was atrocious with a 3-7 record for the month. Most nights Gillies shines with post to post spectacular saves while standing tall in his less aggressive style. Look for Stockton to give most opportunities to him down the stretch as he continues to hold a struggling offensive team in most games. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2016 – Gillies is a future fantasy stud. He looked fantastic in all his pre-season action and will be given every opportunity to continue to grow in the AHL. I’d expect someone already has him in your deep fantasy leagues. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2015 – He will be out for the season after having hip surgery on his left side. He’s been dealing with a strained hip-flexor since Providence College days and after tweaking it on Nov 6th they decided this was the best road to recovery for him. They anticipate that he will be ready to start the 2016/17 season off for Stockton being 100% ready and healthy. – Joel Henderson

Nov 2015 – Has sustained a lower body injury. Seems like a hip issue but nobody is saying much. Might be something that keeps him out for a while. Injuries happen, but nothing suggests that it will be a recurring issue. With Calgary’s interesting goaltender situation, the priority is just getting him healthy and in games. This doesn’t change the fact he is currently Calgary’s best goaltender prospect. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2015 – Jon played his first pro game and posted a 19 save shutout. He was impressive and should be on everyone’s radar fantasy wise. Flames have multiple talented goaltenders but Jon Gillies should be the front runner for the future. – Joel Henderson

June 2015 – Jon signed a three-year entry level contract with the Flames in April after his Friers defeated Boston University to win the Frozen Four. He grabbed the honours for the most valuable player during the 2014/15 Frozen Four tournament and leaves Providence College as their shutouts leader (13) and all-time career goals against average (2.08). Joel Henderson

May 2014 – Gilles nearly duplicated his Freshman year performance in his Sophomore season going 19-9-5 with a .931 SV% and 2.16 GAA. He started in goal for Team USA at the WJC however the Americans struggled falling short of the medal round and Gilles turned in a .892 SAV% with 2.77 GAA. He is an aggressive butterfly goalie and is so big at 6-5 that he will have every opportunity to be a successful pro if he continues to develop and work on his body control. Some say he isn’t strong on rebounds but he is only 20 years old, give him time to be all he can be. Lots of top tier NHL goaltenders had to work on rebound control as a youngster, it’s only natural. He will likely spend at least another year in college before thinking about going pro and once he makes the jump expect a year or two in the AHL. If the stars align Gilles should play his way into the NHL within 4-5 years as a starter. I bet he gets a few looks within three years. Definitely a long term project but don’t forget about him or you’ll be kicking yourself not too far down the road. Brad Wilson

June 2013 – Jon Gillies has been invited to USA Hockey’s National Junior Evlauation Camp for the second consecutive year. This invitation is further evidence of the outstanding season Gillies has enjoyed, as the awards keep piling up. In addition to his rookie of the year status, Gillies was also named to the All-College Hockey News Second Team and the College Hockey News All-Rookie Team. He was John Gibson’s backup  (Anaheim Ducks) at the 2013 World Junior Championship and will battle Gibson to be the starter next year. Sheldon Curtis

March, 2013 – Jon Gillies has enjoyed a spectacular year for the Providence College Friars, helping to establish them as a contender in the tough Hockey East division of major U.S. college hockey. Playing in 34 games this year, Gillies posted a 17-11-6 record with a 2.08 GAA, a .931 SV% and 5 shutouts. He was named the rookie of the year, was a finalist for player of the year, and is one of only three players to earn first team all-star status in his inaugural season (some guys named Brian Leetch and Paul Kariya were the others). Gillies is another massive young goalie prospect, but plays a more upright style than many tall  goalies. He relies on positioning and a surprisingly athletic ability to keep shooters at bay, and is capable of making highlight reel saves. As the Friars lost both their starting and backup goalies the previous year, Gillies’ arrival was timely, and he should play a significant number of games going forward. As with many young goalies, puck handling and rebound control are areas he and his coaches will look towards for improvement. Sheldon Curtis
