Fantasy Summary

Defensive specialist – a beast in his own end whose skating needs to improve

June 2019 – Geertsen did not get a qualifying offer from the Avalanche which means he becomes an unrestricted free agent.  Jokke Nevalainen

February 2019 – Now in his fourth pro season, Geertsen seems to filling a “character” role in the dressing room. His 8 points and 84PIMs in 34 games so far is his best point and penalty pace since entering the AHL, and his upside doesn’t get much higher. Looking like a career-AHLer who may see very occasional injury call-ups but is no longer an asset the team will focus on developing. Hayden Soboleski

April 2018 – His stat line doesn’t stand out but 2017-18 was a positive season for Geertsen. Most importantly, he stuck around in the AHL, finishing with a refreshing 71 games played after two years bouncing to and from the ECHL. He led his team in PIMs by a wide margin, and improved his game as the year progressed. That being said, he will be hard-pressed to earn an NHL role any time soon, so dont hold on in your keeper leagues unless you can really afford to. Hayden Soboleski

September 2017 – As expected, Geertsen has been cut from Avs camp and will start the year in AHL. Hopefully his defensive-specialist game is consistant enough to avoid trips down further to the ECHL like last season. As of now he isn’t high on the call-up list. Hayden Soboleski

March 2017 – Geertsen has struggled mightily in the AHL and has once again seen time in the ECHL. His offensive potential has disappeared, and he has now assumed to the role of the disciplinarian defenceman. It is unlikely he will move up the ladder towards an NHL call-up any time soon. Hayden Soboleski September 2016 – After a quiet training camp, Geertsen has been assigned to the AHL for another season. While still an all-around player, he failed to be noticeable in any one area, in response to which he seems to have embraced a tough-guy role and accepted the fighting is part of his game. He is very far down the list of dmen in Colorado and still at least a year or two from serious NHL consideration. Hayden Soboleski January 2016 – Geertsen has been assigned to the ECHL. This is a step down competitively, but will allow him to log major minutes on a competitive team, which could be a good experience for a player used to being a workhorse. Hayden Soboleski January 2016 – Geertsen has suited up for 24 AHL games this season, playing primarily on the third pairing in a shutdown role. He has served this role well but has encountered typical rookie trust problems and given no offensive responsibilities, indicating a probable entended AHL stay before the Avs come calling. He has three points and 34 PIM. Hayden Soboleski May 2015 – The 2014-15 campaign was Geertsen’s second full season with Vancouver in the WHL and he did not disappoint. In 69 games he improved on his previous offensive totals, leading all Giants defensemen with 13 goals and 25 assists while still racking up 107 PIM. After missing the playoffs in the WHL Geertsen played nine games for Lake Erie in the AHL, where he scored no points but impressed with his ability to lay out opponents and win battles. He signed a three-year entry level contract with the Avalanche and should vie for an AHL roster spot next season. Hayden Soboleski June 2014 – After being traded halfway through the season last year, Geertsen just finished his first full season with the Vancouver Giants. He polished off a decent campaign with four goals and nine assists in 66 games. The big bruising defenseman also compiled 126 PIMs, proof he isn’t afraid to mix it up from time to time. Geertsen will likely play another season in the WHL before moving onto the AHL. He has not signed a contract with the Avalanche, so that will need to be done within a year. Chris Bagwell April 2013- Geertsen was the main piece of the trade that sent David Musil to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Since joining the Vancouver Giants, Geertsen saw increased ice time and increased responsibility allowing him to showcase his abilities. Geertsen is a big body who plays physical but despite this needs to add more weight to his frame. He is still only 17 years old but he has the frame to develop into a physical force. Geertsen’s biggest detractor seems to be his skating which is not developed yet but it’s showing signs of improvement. Although there’s a lot of talent in the Colorado’s defensive pipeline, Geertsen brings a special physical element to his game. Already possessing NHL size, he will need to work on his speed and acceleration to make it in the NHL. Geertsen is very good, however, at controlling opponents in the corners with his size. Expect him to take another step forward with his offensive game this year in the WHL. Bill Kellett
