Observations:
October 2016 – His first NHL game was over shadowed by a teammates huge debut, but in 17 minutes, Marner was not out of place. He had a slow start in “Rookie camp” but blossomed early and throughout the main camp. His making of the NHL squad was proven in his first night in which he generated several grade ‘A’ scoring chances while compiling six shots on goal. The Leaf GM has already stated he will be with the Leafs long term this season but still has much to learn. One drawback was that due to his size pushed off a puck with little effort few times, but that did not deter his drive even while being eliminated from the play. Production will come, but not be overly big for many poolies to rely on this season. Jason Banks
February 2016 – Sometimes it is hard to be overly excited on a prospect when he doesn’t exceed expectations, Marner really fits into that category. Everything he does is on par with what one hopes to see, which means he is on a perfect growth pattern. His World Junior tournament was rather decent for him as an individual despite the poor play of team Canada. His growth in the OHL can be seen with the modest swelling of numbers like points-per-game is up from 2 to 2.07, doesn’t seem like a large increase, but only a handful are scoring like that in Major Junior Hockey. The only step left is pro and likely with a brand new Maple Leafs logo on his chest. It is almost certain he will stay a winger in the NHL, but has some faceoff capabilities. In the OHL he has won 50.5% of his 208 faceoffs but has only seen limited games where he gets to start a shift in the dot. He has recently created a new game high of nine shots on goal, and carries a 19.1% shooting rate. He will need to add bulk very quickly in the off-season to be ready for camp. Jason Banks
September 2015 – The top-5 draft pick did not make it to the end of camp. Brass thought it best to send him back to the OHL to start his season on time and get prepared for all the extra opportunities he will get this season including an expected appearance at the World Juniors. Marner was very good with flashes of brilliance in the Rookie tournament, but was rather quiet amongst the bigger pro players. He still could see NHL time late in the season as no one is expecting the Leafs to be overly competitive this year, and could see a sell off of pending free agents at the deadline. Optimally, Marner will help lead London into the Memorial Cup again and see where the cards fall from there. Jason Banks
June 2015 – The Toronto Maple Leafs select a dazzling forward Mitchell Marner 4th overall at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross
February 2015 – Mitch Marner's slow start is light years behind him and most recently, the young London Knights forward was the first OHL player to reach the 100-point milestone. After a two-goal, five-point effort on February 22nd versus the Sarnia Sting, Marner sits first in OHL scoring with 108 points as he looks to push for a top 3 selection at the upcoming 2015 NHL Draft. Marner was named OHL Player of the Week (for the week ending February 22nd) after scoring three goals, seven assists for 10 points in three games. Brendan Ross
November 2014 – For the second time in the 2014-15 OHL Season, Mitch Marner was named OHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 23rd after scoring seven goals and three assists for 10 points in only two games. Marner has extended his point streak to 13 games and has totalled 14 goals and 39 points over that span. He's been on an absolute tear in the month of November and is producing like no other prospect has in recent years. His exceptional vision, anticipation and puck skills continue to elevate the productiveness of his linemates and he's proving to be a legit contender to go Top 5 in the upcoming 2015 NHL Draft. Brendan Ross
November 2014 – Mitch Marner is a dynamic offensive forward and his innate playmaking skills that routinely features outstanding vision, deft touches and elite hockey sense make him a top prospect. He is a gifted passer who has an extraordinary sense of when to move the puck – an example of his impeccable timing. Dangerous in flight as he attacks one-on-one, he also possesses a gift for escaping pressure without being touched, always providing himself with exit routes. He’s the type of player defensemen know to get the puck to quickly as the play transitions up ice because he is one of the most efficient OHL players at gaining the zone and eluding coverage. His ability to generate speed and separate from checkers speaks to his swift acceleration gears. Marner excels at using quick agile cuts to keep defenders guessing, making it nearly impossible to maintain effective gap control which, in turn, opens up time and space for this talented playmaker. As one could expect, giving time and space to a player with elite abilities to dissect defenses is a bad strategy. Marner is currently ranked 5th in OHL scoring with 13 goals and 32 points through 18 games (as of November 11th). He was recently named CHL and OHL Player of the Week. Marner is riding a nine-game point streak in which he has posted 12 goals and 27 points dating back to October 24. Brendan Ross
Undersized dynamic playmaking winger who is a dangerous option at both even strength and on the powerplay.
