July 2019 – Foo signed a two-year deal with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL. – Joel Henderson
April 2019 – Spencer Foo is a fine hockey player. There are those who are holding onto hope that he could still become a regular NHLer. Calgary certainly tested the waters of their depth but Foo seemed to always be just outside of the conversation. Calgary has searched for RW depth for a few years now but there is most likely a 50/50 chance Foo is back in a Stockton uniform for 2019-20. He would be an affordable AHL piece and could play a similar role and hope to gain a call-up. At this point, fantasy owners can most likely look for better options. – Joel Henderson
Oct 2018 – In the offseason, Calgary addressed the issue of RW depth, which most likely hurt Foo more than anyone. He showed moments in preseason but was arguably never in the running for an NHL job. He is 24 years old and needs to show he can consistently provide scoring at the AHL level in case injury happens. – Joel Henderson
Apr 2018 – It took about half the AHL season before Foo showed his confidence in full. He showed that he can take over games and score goals in multiple different situations. He even saw four NHL games near the end of the year averaging over fifteen minutes due to so many Flames injuries. Bottom line is, Foo could crack the lineup 2018-19 due to system changes, coaches decisions, and depth scoring on the right side. – Joel Henderson
Nov 2017 – So far, Foo is contributing to the notion that you really need to hold the breaks on college prospects turning pro. He currently sits with five points in 15 AHL games, mostly playing on Stockton’s second line. Foo had not contributed a point in his last 6 games. – Joel Henderson
Sept 2017 – Foo remains one who presents sneaky value in deep leagues if you competitors aren’t paying attention. Through training camp, Foo has been a bright light. He competes every night, showing his patience and ability to play with quality players. They have not been afraid to use him on the PP and in late game situations. Regardless of how and when, expect Foo to play a decent amount of NHL games this year. – Joel Henderson
Spencer Foo spent three seasons with Union College in the NCAA and exploded on the scoresheet this past season. He found great chemistry with linemate Michael Vecchione and found success in all aspects of the game. He managed to gather 26 goals and 36 assists over 38 games and generated consistently at 5 on 5. He became a Hobey Baker Finalist and garnered significant attention from a few NHL clubs before surprisingly signing with Calgary Flames. He attended Calgary’s development camp in the summer of 2016 and they had been keeping tabs on him since.
Spencer Foo has good speed and skating ability and can push the tempo fairly easily. His shot generation increased this season as well as his points but he shot 18% for the season. His line created consistently and often but one could surmise there were some lucky bounces among that skill. Foo can create off the rush and push the play into dirty areas. He has a nose for the net and great chemistry with teammates. He has some pretty decent hands in tight as well as above average playmaking vision. The reason for fantasy upside is the same that he chose to sign in Calgary; lack of prospect depth. Calgary has seen tenacious players earn minutes in the last few years and Foo might be the next in line. I’d imagine he pushes for a spot as soon as training camp, but might spend time down in Stockton getting used to the pro game. Joel Henderson
