Matt Puempel

May 2019 – Puempel had an excellent season for the Grand Rapids Griffins as the 26-year-old finished second on the team in scoring with 50 points in 62 games. He was rewarded with a late season call-up to the big club where he tallied a single goal in eight games. With many younger options for the Red Wings to choose from, expect Puempel back in the AHL for the bulk of the upcoming campaign. Mark Hillier

January 2018 – Now with his third NHL franchise, 24-year old Matt Puempel could be running out of time to become a full-time NHL player. Since being traded to Detroit, however, Puempel has been a point a game player in the AHL and leads the Grand Rapids Griffins with 27 points in 25 games. He may yet get another shot in the big league and will have to make the most of it. Mark Hillier

December 2016 – Puempel was claimed off waivers in late November from Ottawa to help provide forward depth in New York. In his first six games on Broadway, he scored a goal while averaging just over eight minutes TOI per game. Unfortunately, Puempel was injured Dec. 6 during a game with NYI and he awaits clearance to return from a concussion. The prolific scorer in junior and former 30-goal man in the AHL has yet to find his way in the NHL. Geoff Kent

September 2016 – Puempel is getting every opportunity this pre-season to show that he belongs in the NHL.  Playing in all three exhibition games, the only Sen to do this, Puempel has looked solid while scoring two goals. If he keeps it up, there is a good chance for him to at least start the season in Ottawa with a rash of injuries striking the Sens, coupled with the fact that he needs to clear waivers if he is sent down. New head coach Guy Boucher has been preaching high tempo and pace all camp, so Puempel have to show he can keep up if he is to see any extended period of time with the big club this season. January 2016  – The Ottawa Senators have played their last game before the all-star break and as a result Puempel has been sent back to Binghamton. In his second go-round with Ottawa, Puempel averaged 12:29 in ice time, registering one assist in three games. Brad Phillips

January 2016 – Puempel has earned another look with the Sens after getting the call from Binghamton. In 11 games this season with the big club, Puempel posted a solitary goal. He’s had more success in the AHL with 13 goals and 11 assists in 29 games. Sens brass will hope that his offence will translate better the second time around. Brad Phillips

March 2015 –  Although he is not going to touch the 30-goal plateau that he reached in his rookie season in the AHL, Puempel has had a successful all-around second season in Binghamton.  The lack of goals in his second season seems to be more of regression to the mean then a sophomore slump. In the 2013-14 season he scored on 16.2% of his shots, an outrageous number across a 74 game season.  This season (2014-15) the young winger has taken more shots per game, but his shooting percentage has dropped to 8.2%, thus producing less goals.  The reality is somewhere in the middle, and if he can keep his shot attempts up, we may see an uptick in his goals scored from this season on.  Although he has not been scoring at a high rate, the second year professional has rounded out his game dishing out 20 assists over 51 games.

February 2015 – Improved all-around play led to a callup to the parent club after Clarke McArthur was placed on IR. Still looking for his first NHL point through three games with the Sens, Puempel’s ice time has increased in each contest and is currently hovering around the ten minute-per-game mark.  With Ottawa currently out of the playoffs in the East and Binghamton needing a miracle to make the playoffs in the AHL, the Sens may take a harder look at their younger players on the NHL stage if they fall many more points back of the wildcard. Continue to monitor his ice time and take note of if he gets any power play time moving forward, but Puempel likely wont fit into your fantasy plans until 2015-16 or beyond. Kevin LeBlanc

September 2014 – A prospect that often flies under the radar, Matt Puempel is having himself quite the start to his 2014-2015 campaign. He turned heads at the Rookie Tournament and has now looked very strong in his first two pre-season games with the Ottawa Senators. Puempel never takes a shift off, continuously skating at full speed. He fearlessly drives the net and shows good finish around the net. It’s safe to say that Puempel is likely a year or two away from being ready to crack a September lineup, but the Windsor-native found the back of the net 30 times with Binghamton last season and has top-six potential. Nathan Martin

October 2013 – It has been an average season so far for Matt Puempel, although he isn’t entirely to blame. Originally the Windsor-native was slotted beside Mika Zibanejad and Mark Stone, but since Zibanejad’s recall and Stone’s injury, Puempel now plays alongside Jimmy O’Brien and Darren Kramer. For Puempel to be effective he needs to play on the top line with creative players. Nathan Martin

December 2012 – Kitchener Rangers’ leading scorer, Matt Puempel, has been sidelined since late November with a shoulder injury and remains day-to-day.  He was also a notable omission from the Canadian National Junior camp for the upcoming 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia. Puempel continues to lead the Rangers with 21 goals and 28 points through 26 games this season.  Brendan Ross

October 2012 – Matt Puempel was named to the 2012 Subway Super Series Team OHL Roster slated to compete in a six-game series versus the Russian National Junior Team in November. Brendan Ross

February 2012 – Matt Puempel has been a consistent offensive threat throughout three seasons with the Peterborough Petes. He has always been above a point per game on a season, but hasn’t shown significant improvements offensively since joining the OHL. Even so, Puempel is a smart player who can be both a playmaker and goal scorer. Thomas Wall
