August 2018 – This year will be a make or break time for Martin. After being sent down to the ECHL with Cincinnati, he only put up 11 points in 61 games and after previously showing some offensive prowess in the WHL, it does not seem to have developed to the professional ranks. Martin is now 22 years old and needs a real breakout year offensively to warrant another contract from the Sabres. He still has NHL potential, but time is running out. Marcus Griep

December 2017 – Currently with the Cincinnati Cyclones, Martin has spent most of his professional hockey tenure in the ECHL registering three goals and eight assists in 51 contests, adding 21 AHL Rochester games without a point. At age 21 he still has plenty of time to ascend the pro hockey ladder, but as a third round pick displaying solid scoring skills in the WHL (21 G, 110 A, 277 games) Sabres’ brass likelly expected a bit more offensive output by this point. June 2016 – Martin has signed a three-year entry-level contract worth $2.055M (685,000 AAV). Martin is likely headed for Rochester in 2016-17, but could get some attention from Buffalo brass come Sabres training camp in September. Paul Zwambag

December 2015 – Martin was traded at the end of November in the WHL. He started his season with the Saskatoon Blades, but has been acquired by the Everett Silvertips. The Silvertips are a legitimate contender in the Western Conference of the WHL. Brycen Martin was scoring at just under a point per game, 25 games played, 24 points (three goals, 21 assists) with the low scoring Blades. He has played seven games with the Silvertips and has three assists, he isn’t relied upon as much as he was with the Blades, but he should still continue putting his name on the score sheet. – Paul Zwambag

September 2015 – Brycen Martin showed he has a bit of offense in his game at the Prospects Challenge tournament, he tallied one goal, one assist and a plus one. His only goal was a game-tying goal against the Boston Bruins, which the Sabres ended up winning in overtime. Martin wasn’t given a chance in any preseason games and before the Sabres’ second preseason game he was sent back to the Saskatoon Blades for his final junior year. Paul Zwambag

July 2015 – Brycen Martin began his third year of junior with the Swift Current Broncos, he was traded to the Kamloops Blazers but the trade was nullified. Swift Current GM Mark Lamb set up another trade for Martin to go to the Saskatoon Blades at the beginning of January. After Brycen moved to the Blades his points/game went from 0.41 to 0.73 over the course of the season, his plus/minus went from +1 to a minus-19. In Brycen’s own words “I got a shot at the top D pairing and lost it right away. I didn’t even have a shot at the first powerplay”. Brycen wasn’t given a chance with the Broncos, but now that he is with the Blazers he will develop his offensive game. May 2014 – Brycen Martin is one of the top two-way defensemen available for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Flashes good skating ability and an ability to move the puck up with ease either by a strong first pass or by use of his feet. Martin has a good understanding of how the game is to be played at both ends of the ice and his versatility is definitely an asset. He’s been a fairly productive offensive defenseman at the major junior level but moving forward, he is more likely to lose some of that appeal. Defensively, Martin has improved and added strength in his sophomore campaign and it’s shown to be beneficial in handling larger opponents. He was the 2011 2^nd overall selection in the WHL Bantam Draft and it’s likely Brycen Martin will land inside the top 60 picks at the June NHL Entry Draft.  Brendan Ross
