Are you dreaming of becoming a professional hockey journalist? Or perhaps a professional hockey scout?

Becoming a prospect analyst at DobberProspects is a good starting point for either of those career paths – but obviously, you can join the crew even if you’re not looking to make a career out of it.

We don’t expect our analysts to be professional-level journalists or scouts. We will provide guidance and mentorship throughout your time at DobberProspects. The most important thing is genuine interest towards hockey and prospects in particular, and enthusiasm to become a better analyst during your time with us.

All of our analysts are encouraged to go to nearby hockey rinks to watch live hockey as much as possible, and our senior crew will provide instructions on how to gain press passes to the games. But we also encourage video scouting and can provide access to certain junior leagues’ live streams and recordings.

We offer a number of different roles and responsibilities which are explained below. Please notice that one person can hold one or more roles based on your interests, so you’ll have plenty of possibilities to focus on the area that interests you the most or you can expand your portfolio. Current openings at DobberProspects

1. Team Contributors: Bruins

Please note that these are all unpaid entry-level positions designed to bring experience and exposure, as well as fulfill a sports fanatic’s dream of having his/her opinions out there for all to see. Entry-level positions open up the opportunity to do some paid work throughout the season, and all senior and management positions are filled from within the organization.

As a freelancer, you will be allowed to do similar work for other services and companies as long as it’s not the same exact role. In unclear situations, management will review the roles and make case-by-case decisions. Our intent is to allow everyone to expand their portfolio as much as they want, even when that includes other services.

The best of the best certainly use this experience and the exposure to thousands of readers to take another step forward in their career. After their time with Dobber Sports, we have had paid and unpaid freelancers and management join media companies like The Hockey News, The Score, Sportsnet, EP Rinkside, and many others. Whereas others have gone on to become scouts for teams in junior and pro hockey in North America and Europe.

Roles and responsibilities at DobberProspects

Editors (senior staff)

• Primary responsibility: All the day-to-day activities required to keep the site running
• Secondary responsibility: Editing feature stories and prospect profiles written by the crew
• Other responsibilities: Writing weekly ramblings

Team-specific prospect analysts

• Primary responsibility: Prospects in the system of the assigned NHL team
  • Following the prospects, their performance and their movements
  • Creating prospect profiles if they haven’t been created before
  • Keeping existing prospect profiles up to date with regular updates
• Secondary responsibility: Writing two feature stories in the off-season
• Optional opportunities:
  • Writing prospect profiles for the Fantasy Prospect Report (paid work, only available to top performers)

Feature story writers

• Primary responsibility: Writing a monthly feature story about the topic that is assigned to them

Scouting directors (senior staff)

• Primary responsibility: Managing a team of regional scouts
• Secondary responsibility: Putting together DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking
• Optional opportunities:
  • Writing feature stories about the NHL Draft
  • Writing prospect profiles for the Fantasy Prospect Report

Regional scouts

• Primary responsibility: Scouting draft-eligible prospects in the assigned region, and writing game reports about them
• Secondary responsibility: Providing own opinions on the prospects they are scouting for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking
• Other responsibilities: Writing short player summaries for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking
• Optional opportunities:
  • Writing player profiles of the prospects they are scouting
  • Writing feature stories about the prospects they are scouting
  • Writing prospect profiles for the Fantasy Prospect Report (paid work, only available to top performers)

Scouting mentees

• Primary responsibility: Scouting draft-eligible prospects in the assigned region and writing game reports about them
• Secondary responsibility: Providing own opinions on the prospects they are scouting for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking 
• Optional opportunities:
  • Writing player profiles of the prospects they are scouting
  • Writing short player summaries for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking

DobberProspects Scouting Mentorship Program

Note: Both positions have been filled for the 2020-2021 season. New applications for the 2022-2023 season will be requested in the summer of 2022.

Much like the hockey clubs that we follow, scout and evaluate here at DobberProspects, we want to make sure that our pipeline is top-notch. We have the opportunity to provide a space for voices to be heard and to aid in the development of scouts. We want to continue to develop our own prospects in a sense. 

One of the things that we want to do is invite aspiring analysts and scouts, from all different backgrounds and walks of life, to apply for the open mentorship position on each team. You will be working closely with a scouting director to not only develop yourself as a scout but also have a voice in the room for scouting meetings, site rankings and everything else that each scout on the team does. 

This position is designed to allow a new face to have a voice. We want to encourage anyone with an interest in scouting and player evaluations to apply.

NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! We want to encourage people from any race, religion, gender or orientation to apply for this position. The hockey world needs more voices and relatable faces from the BIPoC community if there is any chance at growing the game. The DobberProspects team is looking to bring in people who have not had the opportunity to have their voices heard. 

Requirements for the position:

• Able to consistently contribute work

The responsibilities will include: 

• Primary responsibility: Scouting draft-eligible prospects in the assigned region and writing game reports about them
• Secondary responsibility: Providing own opinions on the prospects they are scouting for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking 
• Optional opportunities:
  • Writing player profiles of the prospects they are scouting
  • Writing short player summaries for DobberProspects’ NHL Draft Ranking
