Observations:

July 2017Cormier wrapped up his third OHL year in Saginaw with a 23-19-5-2 record, 3.23 goals-against and .899 save percentage. Reportedly he may begin in the AHL next year where one hopes he will receive upgraded defensive support leading to better statistical results. Given the right situation, his skills should impress at the next levels. Kevin Wickersham

March 2017 – Cormier continues to man the net admirably and actively behind a porous Saginaw defense that plays a factor in his less-than-impressive OHL numbers (22-18-5-2, 3.26 GAA, .898 SV%). Facing slightly more than 31 shots-per-game this season as well as last, Cormier has had a golden opportunity to develop his skills in the crease over the past three years with the Spirit. We shall see if the 19 year-old lands a spot on the Devils’ crowded and talented goalie depth chart as 2017-18 unfolds. Kevin Wickersham

January 2017 – Cormier’s statistics may not seem impressive thus far in his OHL career (.904 SV%, 3.20 GAA in 25 games for 2016-17; .890 and 3.72 in 58 games for 2015-16; and .893 and 3.48 in 22 games for 2014-15).  but, tending net for a Saginaw squad that has undergone a major overhaul during his tenue with the club, the large-framed, butterfly-style goaltender has performed deceptively well. Defensively-challenged, the Spirit has been among the OHL leaders in shots allowed during Cormier’s time. Routinely facing a barrage of pucks, the durable Bowmanville native displays a penchant for anticipating shots, making clutch saves on those taken close to the net, and impressive mobility. He sometimes tends to stray too far from the net when fending off multiple shots, but shows quick and effective glove technique and a highly competitive nature.

Cormier participated in Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Development Camp, along with other widely-heralded goalies Carter Hart, Connor Ingram, and Zach Sawchenko, and his style has drawn occasional comparisons to Matt Murray, while also drawing criticism that he may get down on himself to the detriment of his overall play after giving up goals. It will be interesting to see if he can further rise to the challenge if/when he is supported by a stingier defense. One would hope that his game will continue to develop while facing the amount and variety of shots he does in Saginaw. Kevin Wickersham

Fantasy Outlook: C

Cormier seems to have all the tools to excel at the next level, and may surprise with greater defensive support.
