Observations:

September 2014 – Smith signed a one-year, $1.4-million deal with the Bruins. If Smith is able to build on last season’s breakout performance – and there’s a good chance he will – he will be able to really cash in next summer. Michael Boeckler

April 2014 – Smith was named this year’s winner of the Bruins’ Seventh Player Award. Voted on by fans, the award is presented to the Bruins player who most exceeded fans’ expectations. Smith is now fifth on the Bruins in scoring with 49 points, including 19 goals. He shot up Boston’s depth chart this year and could be a fixture on the Bruins’ second or third line for years to come. Michael Boeckler

October 2013 – Smith’s first month with the Bruins has been a success. He has six points in 10 games and is now playing on the second line alongside Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The 22-year-old has impressed coach Claude Julien and looks to have earned a spot on the second or third line for the foreseeable future. Michael Boeckler

July 2013 – Reilly Smith has been traded to the Bruins as part of the Tyler Seguin-Loui Eriksson trade involving seven players. Smith will join former Miami University teammate in. Brendan Ross

May 2013- In spite of some early growing pains as he acclimated to the NHL game, Smith did nothing to hurt is stock with the Stars. He may have only had nine points in 37 games, but it was the maturity and willingness to play hard no matter what line he found himself on that won over the Stars. His point total wasn’t for lack of hard work or talent. He did add four assists in seven games for the Texas Stars in the AHL playoffs. Smith should be solidly on the radar for keeper league GM’s moving forward. Rex Doty

March 2013 – After breaking camp with the Stars, Smith had a rather quiet NHL adjustment time for about a month. Since then, he has shown maturity and became a reliable forward to the Dallas coaching staff and has been rewarded with extra minutes. In one nine-game March stretch, Smith registered five points and is becoming a player to think about adding to some fantasy rosters. Ray Whitney’s foot injury opened up some extra ice time for Smith to take advantage of on the second line. His value will likely decrease again when Whitney returns, but the longterm outlook is strong. Jason Banks

January, 2013- Smith was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for December. He has ten goals and 17 points in his last 17 games for the Stars. Rich Dillon

December 2012– Smith has become a very well-rounded forward for the Texas Stars and has a strong chance to make the parent club (Dallas Stars) when the NHL resumes play. He is one of their top scores with 19 points in 30 games, as of this time, but he is plus-4. This is very respectable on a team that struggles with scoring overall. He has a good shot at getting regular time on the third line due to his solid overall play and if things work out he could find himself earning an outside shot on the second line with a forward core in Dallas in need of a spark from the younger players in the organization like Smith.

February, 2012 – Smith is a tenacious forward with good hockey sense and impressive hands. The two-time All-CCHA pick had a great junior season at Miami (OH), with 30 goals and 48 points, and is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. Rich Dillon

Fantasy Outlook: B

Showing an ability to contribute to the NHL lineup already, his value is rising and should be considered a prospect to be owned very soon.
