November 2021 – Bastian is heading back to New Jersey after being claimed on waivers. He figures to be utilized how he was last season and may find some use as a banger who occasionally chips in points. Alex Wyatt

October 2021 – Bastian has been seeing time on a line with Brandon Tanev and Riley Sheahan on what is possibly the final form of the Kraken’s opening night fourth line. He has peppered eight shots on net across five games worth of 14 minute average TOI.  Alex Wyatt

July 2021 – Bastian has been selected in the 2021 expansion draft and will join the Seattle Kraken organization. Dave Hall

March 2021 – Bastian has played every single Devils game so far this season, mostly on the bottom-six with McLeod as his centre. His six points in that span show what kind of niche Bastian is establishing for himself at the NHL level, with most of his ice-time being centered around defensive zone starts on shutdown lines and loads of penalty killing. Hadi Kalakeche

January 2021 After finding himself in a very similar boat to Yegor Sharangovich at the end of the COVID-shortened 2019-2020 AHL season, Bastian hoped to claw his way onto the fourth line out of training camp, which he managed by showing great intensity and stick checking while closing down on defenders, whether on the forecheck or at his own blueline. He played 14 minutes and registered his first NHL goal against the Islanders, and Lindy Ruff has been experimenting with Bastian and Mike McLeod on the penalty kill; the pair are off to a rocky start but should sort themselves out as the season drags on. Bastian should see some games from the taxi squad as Ruff looks to maximize his players’ performance through rotations. Hadi Kalakeche

March 2020 –  Some have debated that Bastian has surpassed his “superbuddy” in Michael McLeod.  One of the hottest players for the AHL Devils has been Bastian. He had 16 points in his last 21 games and is now up to 16 goals on the season. His last game for Binghamton even included a short-handed goal. Bastian has truly progressed to the point where he may see some time in NJ soon.  Chris Wassel

January 2020 – Bastian scored 18 goals in 58 games for Binghamton last year but was asked to be more of a playmaker this year. His point per game average has climbed above 0.5 points per game while providing some more muscle and a solid forecheck. His 22 points in 41 games indicate slow and steady development in his offensive game.  Chris Wassel

April 2019 – Bastian scored two goals in his final game of the year for New Jersey against Florida. The forward playing top-six minutes (16+ minutes) showed a little potential and is a player who can hit the net. Chris Wassel

March 2019 – Bastian endured a tough adjustment from the OHL to the AHL. However, this season the winger has become meaner. The result is improved play around and away from the puck. His defense is getting better and enjoyed a brief call-up to the big club where Bastian scored his first career NHL goal. If Bastian keeps progressing, the forward could become a nice bottom-six player who can kill penalties and more. Chris Wassel

May 2017 – After a bit of a late-year slowdown, Bastian closed the OHL campaign with 45 points in 58 games and tallied seven goals and seven assists during Mississauga’s postseason run including a hat trick in their first-round series with Ottawa. Spending a significant time as a Steelhead center, he’s a candidate to help shore up the Devils’ wing play in 2017-18. He should get a long look in camp and may do some shuttling between AHL Albany and Newark, but keep an eye on him. Kevin Wickersham

February 2017 – Bastian is continuing his nearly point-per-game pace with Mississauga (12 G, 27 A, in 42 games) during an impressive team turnaround that has seen the Steelheads propel from last to first place by a wide margin in the OHL’s Central Division. Unfortunately, a late January knee injury derailed him for a few weeks, but Bastian has presumably recovered and recently returned to play. Hopefully, he will continue to excel alongside fellow Devils’ prospect Michael McLeod. Kevin Wickersham

November 2016 – The future may be bright for the versatile Bastian, a mid-second-round pick heralded in some circles as possessing the first-round talent, yet not as widely known as the top picks likely due to a lack of flash in any one area. He profiles as a tough, well-rounded power forward, highly aware and gifted in most areas of the game, and a solid and improving skater with a sizable frame who is willing to do whatever is necessary based upon game situations. Bastian is adept at putting all of his skills together in open-ice situations to aggressively storm past defenders in one-on-one matchups. Equally skilled at shooting and passing the puck as well as using his size and strength to his advantage, Bastian may ultimately be a better playmaker than several forwards drafted ahead of him. Last season, Bastian demonstrated these playmaking skills while skating on a line with Mississauga Steelhead teammates Michael McLeod (his mutually-proclaimed “best friend” and drafted in this year’s first-round also by the Devils) and Alex Nylander. The least known of the three, Bastian dished out 40 assists in addition to scoring 19 goals in 64 games. This Steelhead campaign, without Nylander but still skating with the blazing-fast McLeod, Bastian is on a point-per-game pace with eight goals and 10 assists in 18 games. While he may not be a star in the making, Bastian exhibits many characteristics of a very good NHL winger. Kevin Wickersham
