Observations

July 2018 – The Panthers have re-signed Weegar to a one-year, one-way contract worth $900,000. Even though the cap hit is small enough to bury in the AHL if needed, teams don’t usually like paying that kind of money for their AHL players, so the Panthers are likely expecting Weegar to be a full-time NHL player now.  Jokke Nevalainen

April 2018 – Weegar played his rookie season in the NHL this season and finished the season with eight points in 60 games. The former seventh round pick from 2013 has some offensive talent but hasn’t been able to show much of it at the NHL level so far. The 24-year-old Weegar is a restricted free agent at the end of this season, and there’s no reason to think the Panthers wouldn’t want to keep him. Jokke Nevalainen

March 2017 – The Panthers recalled the 23-year-old defenseman following an injury to Aaron Ekblad. Originally drafted by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft, Weegar is currently enjoying a strong season and leading all Thunderbirds defenseman in scoring with 29 points in 51 games. He has been an offensive catalyst on the power play with Springfield this season and will look to help a Panthers team fighting for a playoff spot. Joel Gluss

March 2017 – Weegar is an offensive minded defenseman with a very good hockey IQ. Although he is small in size, he is able to compensate with his strong skating and positional abilities. There is great improvement to be made in the defensive zone, however his raw offensive talent and tendency to jump in on the rush make him an exciting player to watch and a potential quarterback on the power play. Drafted by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2013 draft, Weegar will have to leap frog several players ahead of him on the depth chart to find a consistent role at the NHL level. Joel Gluss
