October 2022 – Slight change of plans for Thompson entering 2022-23, as injuries last season resulted in offseason surgeries for both Vegas starter Robin Lehner as well as backup Laurent Brossoit. As a result, the undrafted Thomspon will start the year as the number one option for a Knights team hoping to contend, with an average fantasy ADP which reflects that. While Brossoit will be back eventually, unlike Lehner, who’s out for the year, Thompson stands to spend most if not all of this season in the NHL unless he falters. He’ll need to prove that he can stick for an entire year, but you can all but remove the prospect label for the Knights’ goalie of the future. Taylor Davis
April 2022 – After getting in several starts through the latter part of the season due to injuries to Robin Lehner and Laurent Brossoit, Thompson was thrown into the fire in the fire in April. But the 6-3 netminder was up to the task, actually solidifying him as the team’s top performing goaltender for 2021-22. In the last week, with the playoffs on the line, Thompson reeled out two Quality Starts and saved 13 of 15 shootout attempts (i.e. in both games the teams went to at least seven shots before the other team scored) before giving up a goal. The team in front of him just couldn’t score. Nine of Thompson’s last 14 NHL starts were Quality Starts. Both Lehner and Brossoit are signed for next year at a pretty high cap hit, so if Brossoit isn’t moved or bought out, Thompson will have to bide his time one more year in the minors. Thompson is still exempt from waivers in 2022-23 so there will probably be a lot of up-and-down movement to and from the minors next season until this situation gets resolved. Goalies generally don’t stick in the NHL full time until they are 25 or 26, and he is 25 now. – Dobber
September 2021 – Thompson completed the 2020-2021 season winning the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding goaltender. Vegas signed Thompson to a two-year deal after an exceptional 2019-2020 ECHL season with the South Carolina Stingrays. It it unknown why no GMs thought to sign him earlier but his numbers were mostly below average. He appears to be in line to be the back up within the next year or two. Thompson could be a future starter down the line, or at least a 1B. Pat Quinn
