January 2020 – Coming into the season, no one really knew what to expect from Nygård in his first season in North America. Due to Edmonton’s lack of reliable wingers, the Swedish forward’s has found himself playing up and down the lineup in numerous roles. His straight-line skating is his greatest asset which has given him the opportunity to play with Edmonton’s skilled forwards. While he does have good speed he often skates right into defenders and he does not have the puck skills necessary to create space for himself. His six points in 25 games are not anything to write home about but with that being said he does not look out of place in the bottom six. Although he is not overly physical, his competitiveness and his willingness to go to the dirty areas makes him a good role player. Due to Nygård not having a lot of statistical success in the NHL so far, it is not unrealistic to think that he will go back to Sweden after this season although he would not be a bad option on another cheap one-year contract. June 2019 – On May 23rd the Oilers announced that they had signed Nygård to a one-year entry-level contract. The Swedish winger has just completed his seventh season in the SHL where he finished second in the league in goals with 21, and tallying a total of 35 points in 52 games. The 26-year-old likely won’t be a big point producer in the NHL but he could be a contributor in a bottom-six role. It should be safe to say that Nygård is a Tobias Rieder replacement for the Oilers. Rieder’s season in Edmonton was a disappointment to say the least as he recorded just 11 assists and no goals in 67 games. In other words, these wouldn’t exactly be big boots to fill for Nygård. With the Oilers’ need for speed and lack of depth on the wings, the Swedish forward should be given every chance to succeed, plus he has been effective on the PK. If his goal-scoring abilities translate even a little bit to the NHL then he could even see time in the top six which bodes well for his fantasy value. Jameson Ewasiuk
