It’s September, which means that training camps will be opening soon and the regular season just a month away. In this edition of NYNTK, we will talk about the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks system. Despite winning the Cup, the ‘Hawks have a decent amount of prospects, albeit only one that looks like a potential star in Teuvo Teravainen.

Brandon Pirri– Pirri has been biding his time in Rockford, waiting for an extended look from the Blackhawks. That look should come this fall, as the 22-year-old has little left to prove at the AHL level. He has only average size, but is quick and possesses exceptional vision and puck-handling abilities.

 

 

 

Adam Clendening– A physical defenseman with offensive skills, Clendening played very well as a 20-year-old in the AHL, notching 46 points in 73 games. He will likely spend this season in Rockford as well, polishing his work in the defensive end of the rink, but he will be a fantasy factor sooner than later. 40 point potential plus hits and some penalty minutes make him a must own prospect.

 

 

Teuvo Teravainen– The incredibly gifted Finn dominates when playing against his own age and more than holds his own against older competition. While his skills are as impressive as anyone’s, his frame is not. With his elite vision, creativity and playmaking abilities, he could play in the NHL right now. He won’t be rushed to Chicago however, rather the ‘Hawks will let him fill out and physically mature to better ensure success when he does arrive. A bit of risk here, but huge upside as well.

 

 

Ryan Hartman– The son of a former NHL tough guy, Hartman showed at the WJC that he can really play the game as well as add a physical element. Just don’t let his 1st-round selection status fool you into thinking he could be a prolific scorer in the NHL. He is likely a 50-point player at his peak, but will add hits and penalty minutes as well.

 

 

 

Phillip Danault– Chicago traded Dave Bolland knowing that they had a suitable replacement for him in the next couple of seasons in Danault. An effective checker, Danault will chip in with offense but he won’t earn a paycheck by putting points on the board. He is an excellent skater and penalty-killer.

 

 

 

Stephen Johns– You will hear the Notre Dame defensman’s name mentioned among Blackhawks’ prospects and the management and coaches are excited about him. He is a big stay-at-home guy who plays with a mean streak, something that the Blackhawks could use. Johns skates well for his size and knows what to do with the puck, but he won’t put up points in the NHL.

 

 

Drew LeBlanc– Last year’s Hobey Baker winner got a taste of NHL life at the end of the season, but will likely start the season in the Rockford this year. He doesn’t possess elite skills and may struggle to find a regular spot on the parent team. He’s not worth drafting or having on your prospect list at this point.

 

 

Mark McNeil– McNeil is a solid two-way player with great heart and character. He doesn’t have any glaring weakness in his game, but nothing that really stands out either. He’s a perfect third-line center who will win draws, kill penalties and chip in with the occasional goal and will be valuable to his NHL team. If your league gives points for killing penalties and character, grab him. If not, there are better options out there.

 

 

Jeremy Morin– The 22-year-old has a quality shot and is NHL-ready, but can’t seem to stay healthy. Morin lit the lamp 30 times for Rockford last year and would probably be playing for other NHL teams. The physical winger may need a change of scenery to escape Chicago’s depth and establish himself. Morin has 50-60 point potential if he gets a chance and can stay out of the trainer’s room.
