Observations:

March 2015 – Since returning to the AHL following a stint in the ECHL, Ellis has been a much different player posting six points in nine games. With Nathan Beaulieu seemingly a full-time NHLer and Magnus Nygren down long-term with a concussion, there is a lack of productive offensive blueliners on the Canadiens' minor-league team. Ellis has capitalized on the opportunity so far. If his strong play continues he might put himself back on the map as a prospect. Eric Daoust

November 2014 – After playing two full seasons in the AHL, Ellis has been demoted to the ECHL. While the move is presumably intended to give the 22-year-old more ice time, the fact that he is falling down the depth chart is concerning. Ellis is a restricted free agent at the end of the year. Getting an offer from the Canadiens is not a given at this point. Eric Daoust

April 2013 – Ellis completed his first pro season with four goals and eight points along with 57 PIM and a minus-16 rating in 71 games. He struggled early and was used sparingly in offensive situations. He clearly needs another year or two to develop before making the jump to the NHL. The Canadiens have a number of interesting prospects such as Dalton Thrower, Darren Dietz and Magnus Nygren behind top prospects Jarred Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu so it is possible that Ellis gets lost in the shuffle if he does not progress fast enough. Eric Daoust

December 2012 – Ellis’ production from junior is yet to surface in pro, but this is not unexpected for a young defensemen. He has shown ability and willingness to jump in the rush, while starting with strong first passes. Unfortunately Hamilton has an extremely young pro defense, with Ellis being one of 5 rookies the Bulldogs utilize. They will need several seasons to grow and find their roles together, but Ellis is most likely going to go the route of a solid, dependable, minute munching rearguard. Jason Banks

May, 2012 – Morgan Ellis capped off a great season with his stellar play during the Memorial Cup for the Shawinigan Cataractes becoming a 2012 Memorial Cup Champion. He finished second in defensive scoring with five points in six games and has really amped up his offensive game lately. Brendan Ross

March, 2012 – A mid-season trade to one of the best teams in the QMJHL has launched Morgan Ellis into the spotlight. He was a great player for Cape Breton but since the trade to Shawinigan, the steady defenseman has been on fire. With 21 points in 20 games since the trade, Ellis is well on this way to doubling last years 36 point total. He’s a well-rounded defender who plays on the top PP and PK unit. He will most certainly be playing in the AHL next year and has all the tools to become an NHLer. Derek LeBlanc
