May 2021 – McDonald did not play hockey in 2020-21 and is not under contract for the future. Hayden Soboleski

July 2019 – McDonald has signed an AHL deal with the Colorado Eagles. The 23-year-old will not be fantasy-relevant in the short term, but he will remain in the battle for AHL or ECHL starts. Hayden Soboleski

June 2019 – McDonald did not get a qualifying offer from the Flames which means he becomes an unrestricted free agent.  Jokke Nevalainen

Mar 2019 – Easily the most impressive season for the 2014 Flames pick. After 29 ECHL games, he currently sports a 20-6-2 record, with a 2.32 GAA and a 0.921. He has yet to see any AHL action and you can expect that CGY simply wants to use his contract space on someone else. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2018 – McDonald has only dressed for one game out of four but still has not seen any game action for the ECHL Mavericks. At this point, saying ‘McDonald is an after thought’ would be a step up. Little to no fantasy relevance. – Joel Henderson

Feb 2018 – As much as David Rittich and Jon Gillies celebrate being at the NHL level, Mason McDonald hasn’t had any opportunities fall into his lap. Known recently for getting into a scrum and a hockey fight at the ECHL level, Mason now finds himself in the AHL. When it comes to athletic goaltenders, there is always promise and potential, but through media, the organization doesn’t seem to speak of him very often. His time in the AHL has not been anything to write home about. Still potential, but a long way from fantasy relevant. He would be getting semi-regular AHL starts in many other organizations at this point. Calgary is simply deep. Your hope as a fantasy owner is him being included in a trade. – Joel Henderson

Sept 2017 – Let’s keep this short and sweet. Mason currently has three large mountains infront of him. One of the biggest things in his favor is that both Gillies and Rittich only signed one year deals and Mason has 2 years left on his ELC. Currently down in Stockton gearing up for training camp in the AHL. At this point, your league has to be pretty deep to still be holding onto hope. He is young and could make steps, but would need a few bounces his way. I wouldn’t expect many McDonald updates this year. – Joel Henderson

Mar 2017 – Mason has spent the entire season to this point in the ECHL. He has never posted a season of a save percentage over .910 and he will most likely finish below .900 for 2016/17 while maintaining a winning record. McDonald missed a block of games from the start of 2017 until Feb 7, however he appeared in six games in the month of February, posting a .885 SV% and a 2.82 GA which shows no improvement since returning from injury. It’s tough to think Calgary will want him anywhere but the ECHL again next season. He has some work to do. – Joel Henderson

Oct 2016 – Mason was assigned to Stockton Sept 28th and will most likely play a majority of the season in the ECHL unless injuries cause a ripple effect. He struggled in camps this summer, letting bad goals squeek though. His positioning and athleticism continue to improve but rumor has it Flames staff have asked him to continue to play bigger in net. They believe he goes down too early and doesn’t sit upright enough. As a lanky goaltender he is going to have to rely more on his hand high coordination than ever. The future of McDonald will most likely come down to work ethic, which he has. Parsons and Gillies both had great camps, so McDonald has work to do. – Joel Henderson

May 2016 – Mason has begun his offseason training. This time last year, he was rehabbing a second-degree medial collateral tear in his knee suffered during the first round of the 2014/15 playoffs. Charlottetown managed to get into the second round before being quickly dismissed. Mason missed over two months of off season training during this time before gingerly getting back on the ice mid June. Look for McDonald to have a strong development camp for the Flames this season due to extra attention to training. – Joel Henderson

Apr 2016 – After a year which shook some of the fans confidence in the netminder, he still performed adequate for Team Canada and played well down the stretch for Charlottetown moving into the playoffs. He finished 21-15-3 with a .902 save percentage. In the first round series against Rimouski, he was dominant, leading his squad with a .922 save percentage. He is still a very big part of the Flames future. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2015 – Mason has been officially named as one of three goaltenders for the WJC. He is no stranger to this stage and the bigger ice. He has played for Team Canada on multiple occasions including the Under 18’s which were in Finland as well. The other two goaltenders are performing at high levels currently so he will have to perform perfectly to maintain the net for any length of time. – Joel Henderson

Dec 2015 – With Blackwood playing so well, it was tough to confidently proclaim McDonald as the starter. Blackwood will miss the beginning of the WJC which boosts the value of Mason to Team Canada. This will be an interesting challenge for him as he gets pelted with shots in Charlottetown. The defense for Team Canada will be young, so whoever is in net for Canada will have to deal with being very active against the top teams, and incredibly inactive other nights. – Joel Henderson

Nov 2015 – McDonald made 37 of 39 stops last night against Sherbrooke for a close win after getting beaten up for five goals against Quebec the night before. The Charlottetown Islanders continue to be a team with struggles and individual stats do not tell the whole story for young McDonald. As World Juniors approach, fantasy hockey fans should be interested to watch how he performs on the big stage again. With Thatcher Demko’s numbers being insane on a very talented BC team, it will be an excellent chance to prove why the Flames’ scouts had him ahead in the draft. – Joel Henderson

August 2015 – Mason attended Hockey Canada’s summer camp and showed very well. Consider him the favorite to start game 1 at the World Juniors. Joel Henderson

June 2014 – Mason McDonald was selected by the Calgary Flames at 34th overall in the 2nd round of the 2014 Entry Draft. He was the first goalie taken in the draft, as the Flames picked him over Thatcher Demko, the top ranked goalie by many scouting sources. –Kevin Won

May 2014 – Athletic and exceptionally quick, Charlottetown Islanders goaltender Mason McDonald is one of Canada’s brightest prospects between the pipes. He possesses ideal NHL size and some of the best lateral quickness setting him up perfectly to make save after save. McDonald has a sound understanding of goaltending technique and mental toughness but he is prone to wandering out of position occasionally. Coming off an outstanding showing at the Under-18 World Championships, McDonald picked up the Best Goaltender award after backstopping Canada to a bronze medal posting a stellar 1.94 GAA and .930 save percentage.  Brendan Ross
