December 2017 - Still firmly entrenched across the pond, Nygren is following up a year in which he scored the most goals among SHL defensemen (11) while serving as Team Captain for Farjestad BK. Moving to Davos of the Swiss National League, he's again tied for the league lead in goals (eight) and scoring (24 points) and has just signed an extension with the club through the 2018-19 campaign. It's unlikely he'd give all that up, but his game does look likely to translate to North America. He might see NHL success if he were to make the jump. Kevin Wickersham.

May 2015 - Nygren has signed with Farjestad of the SHL, further hurting his stock as an NHL prospect. Eric Daoust

March 2015 - Nygren suffered a concussion in December and has not played since. He decided to return to Sweden to recover. Where he goes from here remains a mystery. If he decided to continue his pursuit of an NHL career, he will remain a decent boom-or-bust prospect in deep keeper leagues. Eric Daoust

December 2014 - Nygren has had a good opportunity with Nathan Beaulieu spending a lot of time up with the Canadiens. He has done well as the Bulldogs' lead power play specialist with 10 points in 15 games. Unfortunately, he has jetted back home before and will only become fantasy-relevant if he remains patient on this side of the pond. He is risky to own in fantasy leagues at this time. Eric Daoust

November 2014 - After leaving the Hamilton Bulldogs last year to return to Sweden, Nygren is back with the Habs' AHL club this year. He currently leads all Bulldogs' defensemen with five points in 10 games. It remains to be seen how truly committed he is to North America but if he sticks around and continues to produce he could be a dark horse to put up decent numbers in Montreal as an injury call-up should the team get hit with a couple injuries on the back end. Eric Daoust

November 2013 - Despite some early success in the AHL Nygren has been loaned to Sweden for the remainder of the season. He could come back next year but with Nathan Beaulieu and Jarred Tinordi ahead of him on the depth chart his NHL future could be in question if he does not have the patience to play in the minor leagues. Eric Daoust

November 2013 - Nygren is off to a strong start to his AHL career with eight points in 13 contests. The Canadiens have an excess of defensemen on their main roster so Nygren is unlikely to see any time in the NHL this year. Eric Daoust

September 2013 - After getting a long look at the Canadiens' training camp Nygren was demoted to the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs. He showed good puck-moving ability in preseason games. Eric Daoust

May 2013 - Nygren has agreed to a two-year entry-level contract with the Canadiens and will sign when a new transfer agreement is finalized after the World Championship. Eric Daoust

March 2013 - Nygren has really come into his own this season, finishing fourth in SEL scoring among defensemen. He will likely remain in Sweden for one more year, but the situation is worth monitoring. Could be a hidden gem if you took a flier on him now. Dobber

July 2012 - Magnus Nygren is an offensive defenseman who owns a hard, accurate shot and excels on the power play. Nygren has scored 11 goals and added 22 assists in 81 games with Färjestad of the Swedish Elite League over the last two years. This past season, he put up 18 points in 50 games while only averaging approximately 12:19 of ice time. In addition, he has also excelled in the playoffs, particularly in 2011 when he put up 10 points in 14 games to help Färjestad capture the Le Mat Trophy as Elitserien champions. While he has shown good offensive ability at the highest level, it should be noted that Nygren was 21 years old when he was drafted by Montreal in 2011, giving him three extra years of development over most of his fellow draftees. Evan Hotham

Fantasy Outlook: C-

A star in the SHL and Swiss National League. It's doubtful he'll make the North American leap, but maybe worth a stash.
