July 2017 - Rooney, an arbitration-eligible restricted free agent after New Jersey recently extended him a qualified offer, completed 2016-17 with 13 goals and eight assists in 71 AHL Albany Devils contests. He also got in four point-less games with the big club near season’s end. Turning 25 next spring, he’ll probably need to add some offensive production to compliment his gritty game if he wants an extended NHL chance. Kevin Wickersham

March 2017 – Rated a C-level prospect by Central Scouting after graduating from Massachusetts' Berkshire School, and spending four years at Providence University winning the national title as a junior and team captaincy as a senior, Rooney has taken the long route to his first NHL experience – several cups of coffee with the injury-depleted NHL Devils as the 2016-17 campaign draws to a close. Signed an entry-level contract with New Jersey a few weeks ago after spending the bulk of the season with Albany. A defense-first forward working on holding on to the puck longer to take advantage of scoring opportunities, Rooney skates fast and excels at doing the little things right in all zones. Highly versatile, he's been used at the AHL-level in both a bottom and top-six role, providing added grit and push wherever needed. Skilled on the forecheck. Unafraid to mix it up when needed. Currently flanked by former Albany teammates Blake Coleman and Blake Pietila while centering New Jersey's fourth line.

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Could fit as a versatile defensive center utilized as a sparkplug in key situations, but likely needs to increase offensive production to stick.
