Kerby Rychel, LW

Shoots: L

Height: 6-0

Weight: 185

Born: 1994-10-07

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA, USA

Drafted: 2013 by Columbus Blue Jackets, 19th Overall

February 2018 - After leading the Marlies in scoring last year and having another solid AHL season this year it still remains clear that Rychel was not in the Toronto long term plans and was part of a trade with Rinat Valiev and a second round pick to acquire Thomas Plekanec from the Montreal Canadiens. Rchel will be assigned to Laval in all likelyhood but probably does not become any more fantasy relevant despite the move. Montreal has less of a log jam on the roster preventing Rychel from making the jump, but in my opinion what is keeping him out of the NHL is his skating, compete and consistency. Peter Harling

December 2017 - Expectations were high on Rychel when he was acquired by the Leafs in a trade for Scott Harrington at the 2016 draft. Unfortunately it has just not worked out for the highly touted 1st round pick, 19th overall, in the 2013 draft. Rychel has decent size at 6-1 and 213 pounds, but he lacks elite speed and does not use his size very effectively. He does have a good shot and decent scoring touch when his game is on. He tends to be a bit streaky and lacking in consistent commitment and drive. He is now in his fourth season in the AHL. It is a long shot for him to make the NHL especially with the Leafs. He passed through waivers this year and was not picked up by any other team. His style of play would suggest he needs to be a top nine player as he is not particularly suited for fourth line duties. While Rychel is still just 23-years-old, he does have some time to develop his game, but his window is closing in on him. Perhaps Rychel could get a boost with NHL expansion that appears to be coming in Seattle but right now his fantasy value is very limited.  Brian Harling

July 2016- After surprisingly failing to make the NHL full time with Columbus, rumors were buzzing and finaly realized at the 2016 NHL Draft in Buffalo when Rychel was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Scott Harrington. This should give Rychel a fantasy boost in value as he will have a fresh start and opportunity to play in the NHL with his Dad's former team. Worst case scenario is Leaf fans tend to over value their prospects so his trade value should increase. Peter Harling

May 2015 – Rychel made a fantastic transition into professional hockey. He put up 12 goals and 19 assists in 51 games with the Springfield Falcons. He also saw some brief ice time with the big club and recorded three assists in five games. Rychel isn’t afraid to drop the gloves either. He will most likely continue to develop his game in the AHL next season, but he could make the NHL if he impresses in training camp. – Chris Bagwell

May 2014 - Kerby Rychel was named OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending May 11th after scoring three goals and eight points in three games. Included in those statistics were Rychel's game tying and game winning goals that clinched the OHL Championship for the Guelph Storm. Rychel led all OHL players in 2013-14 playoff scoring ringing off 11 goals and 32 points in 20 games. Brendan Ross

April 2014 – Since being traded to the Guelph Storm of the OHL, Rychel has torn it up. He finished the season with 51 points in 31 games with the squad. His plus-28 is impressive as well. Currently, Rychel has 14 points in 11 playoff games. The Guelph Storm have just begun their conference final series against the Erie Otters. They took the first game it. Unfortunately, Rychel failed to produce any points for Canada in the World Junior Championships this year. Chris Bagwell

December 2013 - The Columbus Blue Jackets will send a pair of Canadian forward prospects to Malmo, Sweden in Josh Anderson and Kerby Rychel as both skaters were named to Team Canada's final roster. Brendan Ross

December 2013 - Kerby Rychel was part of a blockbuster deal in the OHL that involved sending him and Kings prospect defenseman Nick Ebert to the Guelph Storm for undrafted forward Brody Milne and eight future draft picks. Rychel will join a powerhouse squad in Guelph and look to challenge the Knights and Otters for the OHL championship. Brendan Ross

November 2013 – Kerby Rychel of the Windsor Spitfires was named to the OHL roster for the 2013 SUBWAY Super Series. Rychel’s 11 goals and 26 points leads all Spitfires. Brendan Ross

June 2013 - Kerby Rychel packs an offensive punch with a bit of grit, exactly the type of thing the Columbus Blue Jackets organization has needed. One of the main attributes in Rychel’s game – and one of the few things he shares with his father – is a hard-working attitude. While Rychel is not afraid to drop the gloves, he wants to set the record straight that he is more of an offensive player, evidenced by back-to-back 40-goal seasons in the OHL. With the new management in Columbus, the door should be wide open for Rychel to develop into a top-end forward with some of the other Columbus youth. Tim Lucarelli

February 2013 – Rychel is a natural scorer with a fantastic shooting arsenal and is extremely opportunistic. He owns the size to play as a power forward but lacks the consistent physical aspect to be tagged as that type of player. He can stand to make better decisions with the puck as a passer but it is his scoring prowess that will carry Rychel to a first round selection. The young winger stands a great chance to improve his draft stock as former linemate Alexander Khokhlachev has returned to Windsor to team up with Rychel and the duo has great chemistry together. Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: B

With a fresh start in Toronto it is time for Rychel to step up. The time to transition to NHL player is now.
